Three Students Win Writing Contest
Three freshmen students are winners in the AMVETS National
Americanism
Essay Contest. The students entered the essay contest as an
assignment for Mrs. Gibson's English I class. The students were to
write a 400 word or less essay on the theme: "What Does an
American Veteran Mean to Me?" Essays were judged on originality,
adherence to theme, and literacy composition. Winning first place
(and $100) was Tilyn Bell. Second place ($50) was won by
Kaitlin Figgins. Sam Reed won third place ($25).
These winners have won at the KS local level and now their essays will proceed onto the national level.
National first place winners receive an all-expense paid trip to Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, PA, for a long weekend of youth oriented activities. Dynamic speakers and sightseeing are the highlights of this trip.
Mrs. Gibson exclaimed, β What an awesome honor for these students to receive a monetary award for their essays at the local level! Then their essays have the opportunity to be entered at the national contest for an all-expense paid trip to Valley Forge, PA. This essay proves to students that writing can play an important part in their high school and extended educational careers. I am so proud of my students this year for just being able to write their feelings and thoughts into essays. Congratulations freshmen for a job well done this year in your writing!β
Mr. Shippy, Dept. Commander of Kansas, stated, βIn our books all students are winners for remembering the veterans. Thanks to all the students for work well done.β
