Basketball Teams Lose To Quinter
The Quinter basketball teams won both varsity contests played in St. Francis on Friday, February 24th. The junior varsity boys team defeated the Bulldogs. The JV girls also lost.
Isaac Schiltz scored 32 points in the varsity boys contest, but the Indians still lost to an well-executing Quinter team. The Indians led 9-6 after a trey by Issac Schiltz with 3:12 left in the first period. The Indians fell behind 11-19 after one quarter of play.
The Bulldogs extended the lead to eleven points (18-29) in the second stanza. The Indians closed the gap to six (27-33) on a trey by Wyatt Landenberger with 1:26 to go in the half. Neither team scored again to change the halftime score.
In the third period, an assist from Jonathan Butler to Mason Schiltz cut the Bulldog advantage to four (31-35) at the 5:17 mark. Kyler Zweygardt scored at 4:44 to cut the lead to two (33-35). Quinter answered with a basket, but an Isaac Schiltz trey moved the score to 36-37 with 3:35 left in the period. Unfortunately, St. Francis committed turnovers on their next two possessions. Quinter followed with a trey. On their next possession, the Indians committed another turnover, and Dylan Peter soon picked up his fourth foul on defense. Questioning the foul call, the Indian bench picked up a technical foul. Quinter made one free throw for the foul and both technical foul shots. The Indians trailed 36-43 with 1:43 left in the period three. A bucket by Isaac Schiltz cut the lead to five. The Indians stopped the Bulldogs from scoring, but the Indians turned the ball over before getting a shot on their next possession. A short time later, a steal and basket by Issac Schiltz moved the score to 40-47, and a basket by Kyler Zweygardt cut the lead even more. The Bulldogs answered with a long-range three at the third quarter buzzer. The Indians trailed 42-50 after three quarters.
Quinter increased the lead to 46-55 with 5:24 left. At 4:07, Isaac Schiltz stole the basketball and converted the turnover into a basket (49-55). At 3:41, Cade Bracelin completed an "old-fashioned" three-point play to trim the lead to five points (52-57). Cade scored again at 3:15 on a nice post move to get the Indians within three (54-57). Quinter followed with a turnover. At 2:40, Bracelin's post move resulted in another Indian basket (56-57), and Isaac Schiltz followed with a bucket to give the Indians the lead (59-58) at 1:42. Again, Quinter turned the ball over, but the Indians followed suit at 1:15.
With 47 seconds left, Mason Schiltz fouled Brian Ochs. Ochs missed the throw, and Dylan Peter gathered in a big rebound. With 24 seconds left, Isaac Schiltz was fouled. Isaac made one of two, and the score became tied again at 59-all. Quinter committed a turnover with ten seconds left. The Indians got a long shot for the win, but the shot rimmed out and the game went to overtime.
No one scored in the four minute overtime until Quinter made a basket with 2:39 left (59-61). Dylan Peter scored for the Indians on a stick-back basket and was fouled on the shot. Dylan missed the bonus shot. The score stood at 61-all with 2:24 left. Brian Ochs scored for the Bulldogs on a stick-back basket at 2:01 (61-63). The Indians worked for a good shot at got it, but missed twice from point-blank range. With 1:34 left, a Quinter player scored on a two-foot shot and was fouled - Dylan Peter's fifth. The free throw was missed (61-65). With 58 seconds left, Issac Schiltz was fouled by a Quinter player. Isaac made one of two (62-65). Mason Schiltz fouled out of the game with 48 seconds left. Quinter made one of two to lead 62-66. Isaac Schiltz scored with 38 ticks remaining to cut the Bulldog lead to two, 64-66. Quinter attempted to run out the clock, but the Indians smartly fouled with 23 seconds left. Quinter again made one of two (64-67). A basket by Cade Bracelin with 12 seconds left gave the Indians hope (66-67). St. Francis called time-out. With nine seconds remaining, the Indians fouled Quinter again. The Bulldogs made one of two. The Indians got a good look for a tying shot, but the ball did not go in. The Indians lost another hard-fought game, their fourth in a row, 66-68 in overtime.
Isaac Schiltz scored 32 points to lead all scorers. Cade Bracelin added 11 for the Indians. The Indians shot 8 of 15 from the stripe.
Quinter had three players in double figures - Brian Ochs 26, Brett Crist 22, and Jesse Ochs 15. The Bulldogs were 16 of 32 from the stripe.
In the varsity girls game, St. Francis fell behind 5-9 with 3:51 left in the first period and trailed 8-15 after one period of play. Both teams were making many turnovers, but the Lady Indians were making more mistakes than the Lady Dawgs. The Lady Indians soon fell behind 10-24 and trailed 16-33 at halftime. St. Francis was getting less shot attempts than the Lady Dawgs due to poor ball control.
St. Francis trailed 35-47 after three quarters, but cut into the deficit in the fourth quarter. The Lady Indians trailed 38-47 with approximately six minutes left in the contest, but were out-scored 5-19 in the final five minutes. The Lady Indians lost to Quinter by a score of 43-66.
Kaitlin Figgins scored 14 points for the Lady Indians. Aly Schlepp added 11 and Kyla Bandel 7. The Lady Indians were 16 of 26 from the free throw line.
Kayla Zerr led the Lady Dawgs in scoring with 21 points. Missy Reed 17, Kylie Werth 8, Brooke Flax 8, and Jessica Schneider 7 gave Quinter good scoring balance. Quinter was 14 of 23 from the stripe.
The junior varsity boys game was won by St. Francis. St. Francis jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and were ahead 11-4 after one period. The Indians extended the lead to 16-8, but the Bulldogs came roaring back, cutting the lead to two (16-14) with 3:55 left due to several Indian turnovers. Quinter scored easily on an out-of-bounds play to tie the game at 16-all a bit later.St. Francis regained the lead on a basket by Lenny Olivares with 2:30 left in the half. A Wyatt Landenberger trey advanced the score to 23-16 with 52 seconds left. Joey McCormick scored the final Indian basket of the first half and Quinter scored once more to make the halftime score 25-18, Indians.
Quinter scored on two consecutive treys to cut the lead to 25-24 with 4:16 left in period three. The Bulldogs soon tied the contest, but another trey by Landenberger gave the Indians the lead (29-26) with 3:21 left. The Indians led 35-30 after three quarters of action.
Caleb Frink drained a trey with 6:13 left to give the Indians a 38-31 lead, but Quinter soon tied the game again. Steve Nelson scored a stick-back basket to move the score to 40-38 with 4:59 left. Another trey by Frink gave the Indians a 44-40 lead with 3:43 left. Quinter cut the lead to one (46-45) with 1:20 left, but would not score again. In less than a minute, the Indians received a driving lay-up from Frink, two free throws from Jacob Baxter, and duece from Landenberger (assist Nelson) to take a 52-45 lead with 36 seconds left. The Indians won the junior varsity boys game 55-45.
St. Francis lost the junior varsity game by a few points (score unavailable).
The varsity boys team will host Osborne in St. Francis on Monday, February 27, in the first round of the Substate Tournament. The Lady Indians will travel to Osborne on Tuesday, February 28, for their first round game. Both contests begin at 6:00 PM.
