Junior High Teams Open Athletic Seasons
The junior high volleyball and football teams opened their seasons on Thursday, September 3, in St. Francis when they hosted the teams from Decatur County Junior High. The volleyball team split their matches with Decatur County and the football team lost in a close contest.
In "A" team volleyball action, Decatur County easily defeated the Lady Indians in the first game of the match by a score of 8-25. In the second set, the Lady Indians played much better but lost in a very close match 28-30. In the "B" team match, St. Francis nearly won the first set in a back and forth game, 23-25. The young Lady Indians went on to win the second and third games by scores of 25-14 and 15-9 for the match win.
Next action for the volleyball team will be Thursday, September 17th, when they will travel to Oakley. Match time is 4:30 PM.
The junior high football teams played scoreless through the first quarter. St. Francis stopped two Decatur County drives, one deep in Indian territory, by recovering fumbles. Decatur County scored with 4:28 remaining in the first half on a 9 yd run. The conversion try was unsuccessful. St. Francis trailed 0-6 at halftime.
Decatur County kicked off to the Indians to open the second half. Derek Queen gathered in the kick and returned it 74 yards for the Indians first score of the season (conversion try failed). The score remained tied (6-6) until the Red Devils scored on a 30 yard TD run with 0:34 remaining in the third quarter (conversion failed). The game ended with the Indians on the short side of the score, 6-12.
Next action for the football team will be on Thursday, September 10th, when the Indians will travel to Benkelman to play Dundy County. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
