Sainty Indians Roll Over Hoxie
The St. Francis Indians were on a roll early against the Hoxie Indians on Friday evening, October 9th. The Indians scored on each of their possessions in the first half. Trent Raile scored the first Indian touchdown of the evening on a 16 yard run with 4:30 gone in the game. Drew Zweygardt ran for the conversion points and St. Francis led 8-0. With 3:12 remaining in the first, Drew scored the second St. Francis touchdown. The conversion pass attempt was intercepted, but the lead extended to 14-0.
Hoxie scored their first touchdown of the evening on the ensuing kickoff by returning the ball for an 85 yard touchdown. The PAT kick was good. Hoxie had cut the lead to 14-7 with 2:54 remaining in the first quarter.
Drew Zweygardt scored the next Indian TD on a 9 yard run with 0:44 left in the first. Trent Raile ran for the conversion points to give St. Francis a 22-7 lead.
Terrence Lamb intercepted a Hoxie pass and returned it 31 yards to the Hoxie 1 yard line to set up the next St. Francis touchdown. Cody Sherlock dove in for the 1 yard touchdown with 11:47 left in the second quarter. Cody also ran for the conversion points. St. Francis led 30-7.
Later in the second, Drew Zweygardt scored on a 15 yard touchdown run. Alex Long kicked the PAT to extend the lead to 37-7 with seven minutes remaining in the second. With 0:57 left in the half, Terrence Lamb ran for a 2 yard touchdown. Long again kicked the PAT. St. Francis led 44-7.
St. Francis had six possessions in the first half and scored a touchdown on all six possessions. Using good blocking, the offense picked up yards in large chunks and had little problem scoring against the Hoxie defense. Hoxie gained negative yards in the first quarter and had only a few positive yards at halftime. Hoxie played hard, but with only 14 players suited were physically out-manned.
Trent Raile opened the second half with an 85 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Alex Long kicked the PAT. St. Francis led 51-7 with only 14 seconds gone in the third quarter.
Due to the large lead, a running clock was used in the second half. Many young Indians saw playing time in the second half. St. Francis did not score again, but Hoxie was able to move the ball effectively against the younger Indians and scored their second TD of the game on a 1 yard run by Bainter with 5:38 left in the third quarter. The PAT kick was no good. The St. Francis Indians defeated the Hoxie Indians 51-13.
Drew Zweyardt was the leading rusher for the Indians with 95 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Indians season leading rusher, Trent Raile, only had 6 carries on the evening. St. Francis had 315 yards rushing to 146 for Hoxie. Brett Lampe had a second half interception for the Indians.
The Indians next game will open district play. The Indians host Syracuse on October 16th.
