Lady Indians Compete in NWKL Tourney

Max Jones Field House in Goodland was the site of the Northwest Kansas League Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, October 17th. Eight teams from the NWKL gathered to compete for the league championship. Decatur County won the tournament, going undefeated for the day and defeating Goodland in the championship match. The Lady Indians won one match and lost two.

In their first match, the Lady Indians played the Oakley Lady Plainsmen. St. Francis lost the first game of the match 16-25. The second game was very close throughout with the largest point spread being four points when Oakley led 19-23. The final score of the second game was St. Francis 26 - Oakley 28.

Hoxie was the second opponent the Lady Indians faced. St. Francis jumped out to a four point lead and led until Hoxie tied the game at 10. Hoxie led 11-13 before the Lady Indians regained the lead 14-13. The game was tied at 16 and 19, but Hoxie took the lead 21-22 and the Lady Indians could never regain the lead. Hoxie won the first game 22-25. In the second game, Hoxie jumped out to a 3-7 lead, but the Lady Indians cut the lead to 8-11 with good serving by Kaitlin Figgins and good team play. Hoxie stretched the lead to 13-17, but the Lady Indians came back to tie at 17 and then took the lead 23-21. Hoxie tied the match at 24 and took the win 24-26.

St. Francis defeated Colby in their final match of the day. St. Francis trailed 1-6 and 2-12 early in the match but worked hard to tie the match at 23. The Lady Indians lost the first game by a score of 23-25. In the second game of the match, the Lady Indians took their first lead at 13-12 and stretched the lead to four points, 17-13 and 20-16, before Colby tied the game at 23. The Lady Indians held on for an exciting 26-24 win in game two. The Lady Indians won the final game 25-22 to take an exciting match win.

The Lady Indians played hard and well throughout the day. Competition was very close throughout the NWKL tournament. The Lady Indians will now compete in post-season play at the 2A Substate Tournament in Plainville on Saturday, October 24. Information regarding the tournament will be added to this site when it becomes available.
