Indians Defeat Buffaloes
Girls Defeated by Lady Buffs
The St. Francis Indian boys teams defeated the Rawlins County Buffaloes in high school basketball action on Friday night, February 12th. The Lady Indians were not as fortunate as they lost both contests played against the Lady Buffs.
The St. Francis varsity boys played well throughout the evening and cruised to a twenty point victory. St. Francis led 11-8 after one quarter of play and 21-17 at halftime. St. Francis executed well offensively in the third quarter working the ball for good shots making a good percentage of them. St. Francis only led by four points (25-21) with three-plus minutes to go in the third when Dylan Peter gathered in an offensive rebound and scored extending the lead to 27-21. Isaac Schiltz then hit a trey followed by a basket by Matt Raile off of a nice assist by Brett Lampe. Another Indian steal and a basket by Lampe gave the Indians 34-21 advantage after three quarters of play. The Indians had earned a sizable advantage.
St. Francis extended the lead to 44-29 with 3:02 remaining in the game and led 50-31 with 1:32 left. The Indians defeated the Buffaloes 53-33 for a well-earned NWKL victory.
The Indians had a good balance of scoring with Matt Raile leading the Indians with 20 points and Isaac Schiltz (11), Trent Raile (10), and Garrett Figgins (8) each making significant contributions to the total. The Buffaloes were led in scoring by Rutherford with 12 points. Cook scored 11 for the Buffs. There were only eight total free throws shot in the game.
The junior varsity boys game was a thriller! St. Francis trailed 7-15 after one quarter and 15-22 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Indians worked to cut the deficit to four points (37-41). St. Francis trailed in the contest until the final seconds of the game. Zach Zweygart hit two free throws to tie the contest with only a few seconds left. Rawlins County mishandled the inbound pass and Cody Killingsworth recovered the ball and scored with three seconds remaining to give the Indians an exciting win.
Dylan Peter scored 17 points in the contest. Zach Zweygardt, Jonathan Butler, and Brooks Hobrock each added eight. Portschy scored 17 to lead the Buffs.
The varsity Lady Indians got off to a slow start against the Lady Buffs and could never recover from the deficit even though the Lady Indians made several scoring runs on the Rawlins County girls. The Lady Indians turned the ball over several times early in the contest resulting in additional scoring attempts for the Lady Buffs. St. Francis trailed 0-12 with 4:14 left in the first quarter. The score was 4-16 when Kaitlin Figgins scored five consecutive points for the Lady Indians cutting the margin to 9-16. The Lady Indians trailed 11-16 after one quarter.
In the second period, the Lady Indians continued working in an attempt to trim the lead. The margin stood at 15-20 with 5:35 left in the first half, but the Lady Buffs made several good plays to re-extend their lead to ten points (22-32) by halftime.
The third quarter did not treat the Lady Indians well. They fell behind 26-44 within five minutes and ended the period trailing 26-48. The Lady Indians played better in the fourth quarter, but were defeated by the Rawlins County Lady Buffs 42-55.
Hillary Chavtal (6'1" sophomore post) lead all scorers with 31 points. Kaitlin Figgins (11) and Christina Hilt (8) were the leading scorers for the Lady Indians. The junior varsity girls lost their contest to the Lady Buffs by a score of 35-51.
The next games for the teams will be on Tuesday, February 16th, when they host the Cheylin Cougars. See ya there!
