Junior High Girls Split Volleyball Opener
The junior high volleyball season got underway on Thursday, September 1st, in St. Francis. The young Lady Indians hosted teams from Decatur Community (Oberlin) and Goodland. The teams played well thoughout the evening and were victorious in most of their matches.
In A team action, St. Francis defeated Decatur Community in two games 25-20 and 25-19. The A team lost the first game against Goodland 20-25. The Lady Indians trailed by several points early in the second set but came back to tie the game at 19-19 before surging to a 25-20 win. In the third set, St Francis led 15-14 but fell behind in the final moments to allow Goodland to escape with a narrow 17-19 win in the deciding set.
The B team girls won both of their matches. They defeated Decatur Community in the first match 25-17, 25-11. Against Goodland, the team led 17-9, but allowed Goodland to tie the game at 17. Behind some good serving by Sophie White, the Lady Indians gained a 22-17 lead and went on to win game one 25-22. In the second game, St. Francis trailed until the game became tied at 10. The game was also tied at 18 and 20 points. St. Francis won the second game 25-21. Coach Tina Elliott had the following comments on the evening, "This was the first set of matches for the girls and it was scheduled as a Triangular playing both Oberlin (Decatur) and Goodland on home court. The A and B played at the same time in different gyms for the Decatur matches, so Coach Talley Morrow stepped in and coached the B team girls. Both the A and B did a good job for the first matches against Decatur winning both. The B team also won against Goodland, but the A team struggled with serves and ended up taking the Mustangs into 3 sets and lost. Overall, I was proud of these girls, they worked hard and they definately realize how important servers are. Now we have a starting point on things we need to work on to continue to get better as the year progresses."
Good job, Lady Indians!
