Lady Indians Lose Two
On Tuesday, September 27th, the Lady Indian volleyball team hosted teams from Decatur Community and Cheylin High Schools. The Lady Indians did a lot of good things during the evening, but lost both varsity matches played.
In the first set of the Decatur Community match, the Lady Indians hung tough with a quality Lady Devils team. St. Francis led 8-6 after a kill by Clarice Neitzel, but fell behind 8-14 a few moments later. Consecutive kills by Kaitlin Figgins, Clarice Neitzel, and Figgins again narrowed the deficit to 13-15. DC scored two more points before Figgins slammed another ball to the floor to bring the score to 14-17. The Lady Indians could only earn three more points before the Lady Devils closed out the set. The Lady Indians lost set one 17-25.
The second set was somewhat reversed. The Lady Indians fell behind early, but made a nice comeback later in the set. St. Francis was down by two (4-6) after Laura Brunk made a scrambling save on a tipped ball. A Figgins stuff block cut the Lady Devils' lead to 6-12. The Lady Indians fell behind 6-15, but a Lexi Hilt ace brought the score to 10-15 a short time later. A kill by Figgins cut the lead to four (15-19) and a mis-hit by Oberlin made the score 16-19. The three-point spread was as close as the Lady Indians would get in the contest, even though they made a valiant effort in the remainder of the contest. Two Lady Devil aces moved the score to 16-22. An ace by Figgins cut the lead to 17-22. A Kill by Justice Wiley made the score 19-23. The Lady Devils scored the last two points of the contest on a St. Francis net violation and a Lady Indian overpass for a DC kill. The Lady Indians lost the second set 20-25.
The Cheylin contest was close throughout. In set one, Justice Wiley began the Lady Indian scoring with two consecutive aces. When Wiley's term of serve was over, the Lady Indians led 6-1. A Figgins stuff gave St. Francis a 8-2 lead. Three ace serves by Figgins earned an a 13-5 lead for the Lady Indians. Cheylin soon cut into the lead (14-9) after several miscues by the Lady Indians. A Cheylin kill cut the lead to three (18-15), and soon the Lady Cougars had the momentum. Cheylin trimmed the deficit to 18-17, before the Lady Indians went on to win the set 25-19 capitalizing on several Cheylin miscues.
Set two was an even closer contest. A Brunk-Neitzel double block gave the Lady Indians a 6-5 lead early in the contest. A Figgins stuff moved the score to 8-7. A Cheylin ace gave the Lady Cougars the lead 8-9. A stuff by Trista Orth tied the contest at 10. A Neitzel kill brought the Lady Indians back in front (12-11). Figgins gave St. Francis a two-point lead (16-14) with another kill. A Cheylin ace serve resulted in a 16-18 deficit for the Lady Indians. The Lady Indians fell behind 16-20. A net violation by the Lady Cougars brought the score to 18-22. A great save by Lexi Hilt trimmed the lead to 20-23 and kill by Justice Wiley got the Lady Indians within two (21-23). The Lady Indians did not score again and lost the second set 21-15.
In the the third set, Figgins tied the match at 6-all with two consecutive kills. The Lady Indians fell behind 8-11 before tying the game at 11-all. Cheylin earned leads of 11-15, 13-17, and 15-22 before the Lady Indians rallied a bit to cut the lead to 17-23. Two more kills by Figgins trimmed the lead to 19-23, but the Lady Indians lost the third and deciding set 19-25 to the Lady Cougars.In junior varsity action, the Lady Indians lost to Decatur Community 19-25; 19-25. The Lady Indians defeated Cheylin 17-25; 25-18; 15-7.
The evening was also Senior Parent Night. Senior volleyball team members and their parents were introduced before the Cheylin-St. Francis match. Senior members of the team include: Kaitlin Figgins, Lexi Hilt, Jacquelyn Ketzner, Trista Orth, Christina Schoenrogge, Allison Grice (manager/statistician), Logan Whitmore (statistician), and Ross Nicklos (statistician).
