Football Season Ends in Atwood
The St. Francis Indian football team traveled to Massacre Canyon in Atwood to take on the Rawlins County Buffaloes on Friday evening, October 28. The game was a close contest. The Indians had several opportunities to score in the game, but could not complete the drives necessary to win the contest. The Indians lost the game 8-16.
St. Francis received the opening kickoff. The kick was short, nearly recovered by the Buffaloes, but went out of bounds at the 32 yard line. After a few successful plays, the Indians faced 4th and a long 3, but were thrown for a loss on the play. Atwood took over on downs on the St. Francis 45 yard line.
Rawlins County completed a long pass to move the ball to the Indian's 17 yard line. Two plays later, the Buffaloes scored on a touchdown pass with 9:06 remaining in the first period. The conversion run was also good. The Indians trailed 0-8.
The Indians took possession of the ball on their 35 yard line. Thomas Douthit rushed for an Indian first down. A few plays later the Indians were thrown for a big loss resulting in 2nd and 26. With 3:04 left in the first period, the Indians faced 4th and 10. A long count by the Indians resulted in an encroachment penalty on the Buffaloes. On 4th and 5, the Indians were sacked for a loss.
Rawlins County took over on downs at their 31 yard line. Facing 2nd and 17, the Buffaloes went to the air. Steve Nelson intercepted the pass and the Indians had great field position at the Buffalo 32 yard line.
The first quarter expired after a couple Indian plays. This possession ended when the Indians turned the ball over on downs deep in Buffalo territory.
Rawlins County did not move the ball and were forced to punt. The Indians took over on their own 29 yard line, but punted the ball right back to the Buffaloes.
Rawlins County set up offense on their 28 yard line. Facing 3rd and 9 with 4:29 left in the second period, the Buffs threw a screen pass to gain 4 yards. On 4th and 5, the Buffs punted again.
St. Francis took over on their 19 yard line, but lost yards on the next three plays and were forced to punt.
Rawlins County moved the ball a bit, but on 3rd down Foster Grant nearly intercepted the Rawlins County pass and the Buffaloes punted.
St. Francis set up on their 16, but the half expired a few plays later. The Indians trailed at halfitme 0-8.
Rawlins County had good field position after a short Indian kickoff beginning on their 36 yard line. Several plays later, the Buffaloes punted the ball and the Indians were trapped deep in their own territory on the 10 yard line.
A penalty on the Indians moved the ball back to the 2 1/2 yard line. The Indians fumbled the snap on the next play and were stopped in the end zone for a safety. Rawlins County led 0-10 with just over 10 minutes left in the 3rd period.
The St. Francis squibb lick was short and Rawlins County set up on their 34 yard line. A few plays later, they punted the ball back to the Indians.
St. Francis took over on their 17 yard line with 6:28 left in the third period. Facing 4th and 2 deep in their own territory, the Indians elected to go for it. An Indian penalty resulted in 4th and 14. The Indians punted again.
Moving from their 30 yard line, Rawlins County advanced the ball. St. Francis was called for pass interference which resulted in a 1st down on the Indian's 32 yard line. A Zach Gienger sack ended the third period. Rawlins County passed the football to the 9 yard line to set up first and goal. A Rawlins County pass to the tight end resulted in a touchdown with 10:32 left in the game. The drive in which the Buffaloes had three 10 yard penalties finally culminated in a score. The Indian defense blocked the PAT attempt. The Indians trailed the Buffaloes 0-16.
St. Francis had great field position after the kickoff beginning offense on the 50 yard line. Thomas Douthit had a nice run but fumbled the football which was recovered by the Indians on the Buffs 46. A few plays later, Douthit scored on a 27 yard touchdown run with 8:41 left in the contest. The conversion attempt was stuffed by the Buffs defense. The score stood at 6-16.
Rawlins County went three and out and punted the ball back to the Indian 34 yard line. On first down, the Indians ran for seven yards. On second down, Douthit rambled to the 9 yard iine. On the next play Douthit carred to the five. The Indians were threatening. On 2nd and goal, a fumble by Wolaver ended the drive.
Rawlins County recovered on the three yard line. A penalty on the Buffs moved the ball back to the 1 1/2. The Indians sacked the Buffs for a short loss (1/2 yard line) on the next play to force 3rd down and 11 yards to go. On fourth down, the Indians blocked the Atwood punt for a safety. The score stood at 8-16 with just over 4 minutes left in the contest.
St. Francis received the safety kick and set up on their 25 yard line. A few plays later, a fumbled snap which was recovered by the Buffaloes, stopped the Indian drive.
Rawlins County moved the ball back to the Indian 30 yard line but turned the ball back to the Indians on downs.
St. Francis soon faced 4th and 16. On fourth down, the Indians were sacked for another loss. Rawlins County used the victory formation to run out the game clock. The Indians lost the contest 8-16.
The Indians completed the season with a record of 2-7.
