Cheylin won both contests against St. Francis in the final pool play round of the Sagebrush Classic Basketball Tournament in Brewster on Friday, December 9. The Lady Cougars defeated the Lady Indians by eighteen points, and the Cougars defeated the Indians by six.
The Lady Indians turned the ball over numerous times, got into some early foul trouble, and shot 25% from the field in their loss to the Cheylin Lady Cougars. St. Francis led 6-2 early, but a trey by Cheylin gave the Lady Cougars a 6-7 advantage. Katlin Figgins scored a fast break basket off a nice pass by Justice Wiley to regain the lead 8-7. The boys contest was a game of two very differing halves. Cheylin owned the first half and St. Francis the second. With less than three minutes gone in the game and the score tied 4-4, Cheylin's 6' 8" junior, Joshua Keltz, received his second foul and went to the bench. That should have been helpful to the Indians, but at the 2:05 mark Dylan Peter picked up up his second foul also. The game stood at 6-9 Cheylin at the time, but the Indians made several turnovers in the fast-paced contest and missed a couple point-blank shots. The Indians trailed 6-14 after one period of play.
The Indians had trouble connecting on their shots in the second period and their defense was also lacking. The deficit soon ballooned. The Indians trailed 6-21 at the 5:06 mark. A basket by Wyatt Landenberger with 3:03 remaining in the half ended an Indian scoring drought that had lasted for nearly one quarter. The score advanced to 8-28 with Wyatt's shot. The Indians trailed 14-35 at halftime. The Indians appeared frustrated, and there was no doubt Coach Beim's was as he continued to try to 'light a fire" in the Indians performance.
The Indians came out of the locker room with a new purpose. With 3:24 left in the third, they had trimmed the lead to 22-35. At the 3:08 mark, Dylan Peter picked up his 4th foul and sat again. The Indians kept working hard and soon had the lead trimmed to 26-37. Cheylin scored their first basket of the period (a trey) at the 1:00 mark to make the score 26-40. The Indians trailed 26-42 after three quarters. The Indians played outstanding defense during the period, contesting shots and passes, rebounding well, and hustling hard.
With 6:40 left in the game, the Indians cut the lead to ten points (32-42) on a basket by Cade Bracelin. A steal and basket by Mason Schiltz cut the deficit to eight (34-42) with approximately five minutes left. At the 4:10 mark, Isaac Schiltz collected his 4th foul as he took the ball aggressively to the basket. A trey by Dylan Peter made the score 39-48 with 3:09 left. A trey by Isaac Schiltz cut the lead to eight (42-50) with 2:35 to go. With 1:38 to go, the Indians scored again (44-52). Peter scored on a nice post move to cut the lead to six (46-52) with 1:15 left.
With time slipping away, the Indians wisely used fouls to conserve the clock for offense. Cheylin's Orten made two free throws with 57.5 second left (46-54). Isaac Schiltz made a trey with 49 seconds to go (49-54). Orten answered with two more free throws with 46.7 left (49-56). After a missed shot by the Indians, Reeh was fouled but missed the throw. Dylan Peter fouled out with 19.5 seconds left. Cheylin's Young made 1 of 2 from the line (49-57). The Indians missed their next field goal attempt and fouled again. Young was 1 of 2 again (49-58). Mason Schiltz scored 12 and Dylan Peter 9. Young led the Cougars with 16 points. Reeh and Keltz each added 10, and Orten scored 9.
