Teams Swept By Oakley
The St. Francis teams didn't have much luck in Oakley Friday night......it was Friday the 13th. All four teams were defeated by the home-standing Plainsmen.
Kaitlin Figgins scored the first four points for the Lady Indians to even the score at 4-4, but it was 4-11 at the 3:33 mark as the Lady Plainsmen began to pull away. The Lady Indians trailed 8-20 after one quarter of play.
The remainder of the contest was marred by numerous Lady Indian turnovers and missed shots. The Lady Plainsmen consistently beat the Lady Indians down the floor and on the boards. The Lady Plainsmen moved the ball effectively getting good shots and continued to increase their lead throughout the contest. The Lady Indians trailed 12-30 with 2:13 left in the second period and 14-36 at halftime.
The margin increased to 18-44 with 5:31 left in the third period and stood at 24-55 after three quarters. With the game ending with the running clock rule in effect, the Lady Indians were defeated by a good Oakley team 29-64.
Both teams shot very well from the free throw line in the game. St. Francis connected on 9 of 11 free throws while Oakley was 7 of 9.
Kaitlin Figgins scored 16 points to pace the Lady Indians. Laura Brunk added 5. Oakley received good balanced scoring from Pilkington (22), Hemmert (10), Weiser (9), and Jirak (8).
The Oakley boys took control of the game from the outset. Sophomore Austin Baalman scored the first six points of the game. The Indians trailed 11-21 after one quarter. The Plainsmen had the advantage due to excellent passing and offensive rebounding, getting the ball inside for good shots.
With 5:51 left in the half, Dylan Peter picked up his second foul and headed to the bench. The Indians were trailing 13-30 at the time. The Indians closed the gap a bit in the later portion of the first half, but trailed 21-37 at the break.
The Indians came out of the locker room with more resolve and closed the deficit to 27-39 early in the third period. The Plainsmen then responded with a small run of their own. An assist by Isaac Schiltz to Mason Schiltz moved the score to 35-49 with 1:00 left in the third. A trey by Isaac with 32 seconds left cut the margin to 38-49, but the Plainsmen answered with a trey of their own. The third period closed with the Indians trailing 38-52.
The Plainsmen scored the first six points of the fourth period and led by 22 (46-68) at one point. The Indians were defeated by the Plainsmen 50-70.
Oakley had four players in double figures: Baalman (18), Llewellyn (16), Hubert (16), and Keller (11). The Plainsmen were 2 of 2 from the free throw line. The Indians received 18 points from Isaac Schiltz, 11 from Mason Schiltz, and 10 from Dylan Peter. The Indians were 6 of 10 from the line.
In junior varsity girls action, the Lady Indians tied the contest at 8-all on a trey by Aby Fernandez with 1:17 left in the first period, but trailed 10-15 after one period. With Oakley gaining an advantage due to Lady Indian turnovers and rebounding, the Lady Indians fell behind 10-23 with 5:35 left in the second period and trailed 10-37 after two quarters.The junior varsity contest was shortened to three quarters only due to limited number of players. The Lady Indians did not score again until there was 3:24 left in the contest. Aubrey Mills connected on a trey to move the score to 13-45. The junior varsity Lady Indians were defeated 13-55. Oakley had out-scored the Lady Indians by 37 points in the final two periods.
The junior varsity boys were also defeated by the Plainsmen.
The St. Francis teams will be competing in the Northwest Kansas League Tournament in Quinter on Tuesday, January 17th.
