Indians Win in First Round of NWKL
Lady Indians Lose to RC
The St. Francis Indians defeated Quinter in the opening round of the Northwest Kansas League Basketball Tournament in Quinter on Tuesday, January 17. The Indians now advance to the championship semifinals and will play Ness City on Friday, January 20, at 7:30 PM in the Varsity Gym in Quinter.
Matt Tygart scored the first goal of the evening. Matt's basket was closely followed by a trey from Jonathan Butler. Mason Schiltz then scored two baskets, one on an assist by Isaac Schiltz. Isaac followed with a trey and the Indians were quickly up 11-0. A bit later, another trey by Isaac Schiltz moved the advantage to 21-7. The first quarter closed with the Indians in command 32-14.
The Indians stretched the lead to 40-16 with 5:53 left in the second period and led 51-27 at halftime. The Bulldogs cut into the lead a bit in the third period, but the Indians still led 69-48 after Quinter hit a long 3-point shot at the buzzer.
The Indian lead stretched to 31 (80-49) at the 4:43 mark in the fourth period when Jonathan Butler connected on two free throws. The remainder of the game was completed under the running clock rule. The Indians defeated the Bulldogs 82-57.
The Indians made 10 treys in the contest, seven of them in the first half. The Indians also connected on 18 of 24 free throws. Quinter was 4 of 8 from the line.
Isaac Schiltz (25), Dylan Peter (21), and Mason Schiltz (17) led the Indians in scoring. Brian Ochs (6' 4" Sr.) led the Bulldogs with 20 points. Ryan Tebow added 9.

The girls contest was another match-up between Rawlins County and St. Francis. As in the the previous two, Rawlins County won this game also.
The Lady Indians fell behind 0-8 with less than four minutes gone in the contest. The Lady Buff's Hillary Chvatal (6' 2" Sr.) picked up her second foul with 4:04 left in the first period and went to the bench for a short time. Kaitlin Figgins picked up her second foul with 3:24 left and went to the bench for the remained of the first half. Laura Brunk scored the Lady Indian's first basket on an out-of-bounds play with under three minutes left in the period. The first period closed with the Lady Indians trailing 6-19.
With the Lady Indians having difficulty scoring and also stopping the Lady Buffs strength inside, the margin increased to 10-30 with two minutes left in the second period. The Lady Indians trailed 15-32 at halftime.
The Lady Indians trailed 29-47 after three quarters of play and lost the game 39-65.
Clarice Neitzel led the Lady Indians in scoring with 15 points. Laura Brunk added 14. The Lady Indians were 10 of 14 from the free throw line. Hillary Chvatal scored 30 for the Lady Buffs. Katie Withington chipped in 12 and Abby Wolters 8. The Lady Buffs were 18 of 29 from the line.
The Lady Indians will play Quinter on Friday at 3:00 PM in the consolation semifinals.The game will be held in the Junior High Gym in Quinter.
