Varsity VB Splits Matches With Weskan

Lady Indians JV Wins

On Tuesday,  September 9, the St. Francis Lady Indian volleyball teams hosted the Weskan Lady Coyotes in St. Francis. The varsity Lady Indians played two matches, winning the first match against Weskan and losing the second.  Both matches were very close and exciting. The junior varsity Lady Indians defeated Weskan in three straight sets in a best 3-of-5 match.

In the first varsity match, St. Francis jumped out to an early 5-0 lead behind some good serving by McKayla Taylor. After a Weskan time-out, the score advanced to 6-0 before a middle kill by Weskan stopped the Lady Indian run. After Weskan made a run, a kill by Journey Lee moved the score to 9-6. A strong kill by the Lady Coyotes making the score 14-11 was followed by a Lady Indian hitting error. A stuff block by Weskan narrowed the margin to 14-13. A good dig on a nice hit by the Lady Indians resulted in a first-ball-over kill for the Lady Coyotes to tie the game at 14-all. Weskan missed their next serve to allow St. Francis to regain the lead. Journey Lee recorded a kill before another missed serve by the Lady Coyotes gave the Lady Indians a two-point advantage (17-15). Unfortunately, the Lady Indians missed their serve also. A Weskan kill tied the game at 17-all. Two Weskan miscues were followed by an overpass tip by Ashlee Orth to give the Lady Indians a 20-17 lead. Weskan trimmed the margin to one (20-19), but the game ended after two Weskan hitting errors. The Lady Indians won game one 25-21.

An Emily Elfers tip and a McKayla Taylor ace gave the Lady Indians a 2-0 lead in game two. The score advanced to 6-1, and Weskan missed another serve on the next play (7-2). A Weskan tip narrowed the margin to 9-8, but again the Lady Coyotes missed a serve. With the score tied 12-12, Weskan nailed a strong spike to take a 12-13 lead. Two Weskan errors and another missed serve, placed the Lady Indians back in front 15-13. The Lady Coyotes tied the game at 16-all and took the lead (16-17) on the next St. Francis error. A kill by Journey Lee was followed by a Kyla Bandel dump set and the Lady Indians retook the lead (18-17). After two consecutive Weskan serving errors, St. Francis led 20-19. An ace by Kyla Bandel gave the Lady Indians a two-point lead (23-21), but Weskan answered with two straight kills to tie the contest. The Lady Indians won game two 25-23.

In junior varsity action, St. Francis defeated Weskan a best 3-of-5 match in three straight sets. The first two games were close with St. Francis winning 25-17 in game one and 25-19 in game two. Game three was a blow-out as the Lady Indians led 14-2 and 20-4 before winning 25-6.

The second varisty match was as close as the first one, but this time, Weskan won 21-25; 24-26. The Lady Indians trailed 1-4 after a Weskan ace and a Lady Indian blocking error, but Weskan missed their serve to stop the short run. Journey Lee recorded a kill after a long volley to narrow the deficit to 2 points (3-5), but Weskan soon led 5-10. Following kills by McKayla Taylor and Ashlee Orth and two Weskan hitting errors, the score became 11-12. The Lady Indians earned a two-ppint lead (14-12). The next stretch of play was marked by passing errors, hitting errors, and missed serves by both teams, but the game was tight and exciting. The score was tied at 14, 15, 16, and 17 before consecutive missed serves by the Lady Indians allowed the Lady Coyotes to earn a 17-20 lead. The Lady Indians closed the gap to 21-22, but Weskan finished the game with three straight kills to win 21-25.

The Lady Indians fell behind 2-7 early in game two, but consecutive Weskan hitting errors tied the game at 7-all. With the game tied at 8-8, Weskan earned five consecutive points, two coming on ace serves. The Lady Indians trimmed the margin to 12-14 only to miss another serve. The Lady Indians fought hard and tied the game at 16 and 18. A stuff by Emily Elfers put the Lady Indians in front. Kyla Bandel followed with two aces for a 21-18 lead. A misjudged ball and a net violation by the Lady Indians tied the game at 24-all. Weskan defeated St. Francis 26-24.

The Lady Indians will play in the Gove County Classic Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, September 13.
