Lady Indians Lose Two at Home

The Lady Indian volleyball team came up a bit short on the scoreboard in both matches played on Tuesday, September 30, in St. Francis. The Lady Indians lost to Decatur Community 25-23; 23-25; 14-25 and to Cheylin 19-25; 20-25 in varsity action. The Lady Indian junior varsity teams won both of their matches in two games.

The Lady Indians trailed Decatur Community (DC) 1-3 early in game one after a DC kill of an St. Francis over-pass. After four consecutive Decatur Community passing and hitting errors, the Lady Indians took a 5-4 lead. Consecutive Lady Red Devil aces moved the score to 5-7. The lead changed again (8-7) as a result of a tip-kill by McKayla Taylor. The margin never grew larger than two points, and the teams traded the lead several times as the match continued. The Lady Indians earned a 21-19 lead after aces by Katie Schmid and Ashlee Orth and a kill by McKayla Taylor. The Red Devils called time-out to discuss strategy. After the time-out, the Lady Red Devils committed a hitting error giving St. Francis a 3-point lead. The Lady Indians missed their next serve. Emily Elfers recorded a kill to move the scoreboard to 23-21. DC followed with consecutive kills to tie the game (23-23). After a St. Francis time-out, the Lady Indians earned another Elfers kill, and a DC attack error sealed the game one victory for the Lady Indians.

Game two was just as close. Kills by McKenzie Taylor tied the match at 2-all and 6-all. DC earned a two-point lead, but a McKayla Taylor kill trimmed the margin to 7-8. A Lady Indian setting error was followed by a pass into the net. DC added a kill to take a three-point lead (8-11). Thankfully, the Lady Devils missed their next two service attempts to slow the momentum. The next run belonged to Decatur Community. Four consecutive errors by the Lady Indians and a DC ace quickly moved the score to 12-17 before the run ended on a kill by Kylie Sherlock. An over-pass kill by McKayla Taylor further trimmed the margin, and DC contributed with a net violation. An ace serve, followed by a Kylie Sherlock kill, gave St. Francis the lead 18-17. The advantage grew to two-points after DC hit out-of-bounds, but the Lady Indians missed another serve and committed a passing error to allow DC to tie the game (19-19). The teams traded hitting errors and missed serves until a kill by Emily Elfers tied the game again at 23-all. Two strong kills by the Lady Red Devils completed the game. The Lady Indians lost game two 23-25.

Game three was not as close, as the Lady Indians fell behind in the early going and could never recover. After being tied at 1, 2, 3, and 5 points, the Lady Devils began to pull away. Two attack errors by the Lady Indians and two kills by the Lady Devils gave DC a 5-9 advantage. Five more DC kills and a DC ace quickly widened the margin to 6-16. Sydney Sundstrom stopped the DC run with a kill. St. Francis won an extended volley on a DC hitting error (8-16). Unfortunately, several communication and judgment errors by the Lady Indians resulted in 12-point advantage for the Lady Red Devils before the game ended. The Lady Indians lost game three 14-25.

In junior varsity action, St. Francis defeated Decatur Community in two games, 25-13, 25-17.

St. Francis jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead against Cheylin in game one, receiving kills from McKayla Taylor and Emily Elfers and an ace serve by McKayla Taylor. A strong Cheylin spike trimmed the lead to 7-5. The Lady Cougars missed their next two service attempts to help the Lady Indian cause, Kylie Sherlock spiked a Cheylin over-pass and McKayla Taylor earned another kill to put the Lady Indians up 12-6. After a Cheylin time-out, Sherlock made a nice block to extend the lead even more. Trailing 14-7, the Lady Cougars made their move. Taking advantage of Lady Indian errors and earning four kills in a few volleys, the Lady Cougars soon forged a 15-16 lead. The Lady Cougars ended the run by missing another serve. A kill by Emily Elfers gave St. Francis the lead 18-17. Unfortunately, the Lady Indians would not score again until Cheylin held an 18-24 advantage. The Lady Indians lost game one 19-25.

An ace serve by KcKayla Taylor and two kills by Emily Elfers helped the Lady Indians advance to a 7-1 lead in game two. Consecutive kills by Cheylin cut the margin to 7-5 and soon the game was tied 8-8. An ace serve gave the Lady Cougars a 9-10 lead. The Cheylin advantage grew to 9-13 before a missed serve by the Lady Cougars stopped the run. Another Lady Cougar missed serve tied the contest at 13-all, but the Lady Indians also missed their following service attempt to give Cheylin the lead. The deficit increased to 13-18 before Journey Lee earned a kill for St. Francis. Five consecutive errors by the Lady Indians placed them at a 14-24 disadvantage. The last two Lady Indian points came on ace serves by McKayla Taylor. The Lady Indians lost 20-25.

In junior varisty action against Cheylin, the Lady Indians earned a 12-7 lead aided by two ace serves by Reagan Beims. Cheylin regained the lead (15-16). A kill by Makayla Rogers tied the game at 16-all. An ace by Madi Tice advanced the score to 18-16. Several Cheylin passing and attack errors resulted in a 25-19 win for the Lady Indians in game one.

The Lady Indians controlled game two from the outset. Eight passing errors by the Lady Cougars and a kill by Zoe Sundstrom allowed the Lady Indians to assume a 9-2 advantage. Cheylin trimmed the margin to 10-7, but lost game two to the Lady Indians, 25-10.

The Lady Indians will be competing in the Oberlin Invitational Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, October 4.
