Lady Wildcats Defeat the Lady Indians

The Wallace County Lady Wildcats defeated the Lady Indians in high school basketball in St. Francis on Tuesday, February 24, 2015. The Lady Wildcats jumped all over the Lady Indians early in the varsity contest and cruised to a run-away victory. The junior varsity Lady Indians defeated the Lady Wildcats in a two-quarter contest 23-19 in the grade school gymnasium.

In varsity action, the Lady Wildcats applied good defensive pressure and employed an efficient transition game to take control of the contest from the outset. Wallace County (WC) scored the first 7 points of the contest. Kayla Reed put the Lady Indians on the board with a two point goal, but the Lady Wildcats scored 8 more unanswered points to lead 2-15 just over four minutes into the contest. Two St. Francis treys, one by Val Wurm and one by Kyla Bandel increased the Lady Indian point total, but St. Francis trailed 8-19 after one period.

The Lady Indians only scored 3 points in the second period. The points came on an out-of-bounds-play basket by Emily Elfers and a free-throw by Journey Lee. Meanwhile, the Lady Cats were efficiently adding to their point total to lead 11-32 by the halftime break.

The deficit continued to increase in the early portion of the third period as the Lady Indians earned one free-throw while Wallace County earned three baskets and a charity toss (12-39). Later in the period, consecutive baskets by Journey Lee and Reagan Beims trimmed the deficit a bit. WC scored the final two baskets of the period, a trey and post-move score, to lead 16-44 at the third quarter break.

The Lady Indians earned three scores in the final period (Kylie Sherlock jumper, Val Wurm offensive rebound, and Kyla Bandel trey). The Lady Indians lost to a good Wallace County team 23-53.

The Lady Indians were led in scoring by Valerie Wurm and Kyla Bandel with 6 points each. Journey Lee added 3 points. Kayla Reed, Kylie Sherlock, Emily Elfers, and Reagan Beims each added 2 points. The Lady Indians made 2 of 4 from the line and connected on three treys.

Wallace County had three players in double figures:  Rylea Rains (5' 9" Sr.) 11, Rachael Kuhlman (5' 7" Sr.) 10, and Chanity Daily (6' 0" sr.) 10. The Lady Wildcats made three treys and 4 of 7 from the stripe.

After the game, seniors Kyla Bandel, Mariah Beikman, and Valerie Wurm and their parents were recognized for their contributions to the Lady Indians basketball program.

The Lady Indians will play Victoria in Sub-State action on Monday, March 2, at 6:00 p.m. in Quinter.
