Pertussis Information Released

The Cheyenne County Heath Department has confirmed a positive case of pertussis (whopping cough) in Cheyenne County. The case is currently being treated, but the Department has asked that information be disseminated through the school website so that community members have factual information regarding the disease. A Pertussis Q&A Handout from the CDC.gov website was provided and can be accessed from the link below. CDC.gov is the BEST and most accurate website resource for parents to learn the facts about this very contagious disease.

Mila Bandel, CCHD nurse, stressed that the CCHD does not want families to become panicked with this situation, however, it is a situation where we need to stress that sickness stays home and that sick persons should be seen by their medical provider immediately.

Mrs. Bandel also stated the best way to prevent this problem is by vaccinations. A large percentage of the students in Cheyenne County Schools have already been vaccinated for pertussis, unfortunately, not all of the students. The health department has sent letters to the families asking them to be vaccinated, however, there are those families that do not believe in vaccinations. Mrs. Bandel continued, "I hope we can work together on this issue and prevent future outbreaks. If you have any questions or concerns, please give the Cheyenne County Health Department a call (785-332-2381). Thanks for your cooperation."
