St. Francis Indians defeated Hill City by halftime at the homecoming game, 66-18.

At the game, the Indians broke a state completion record for eight-man football. St. Francis Assistant Coach Nick O’Loughlin said, 17 out of 18 passes were completed in the game, which meant the completion rate was 94.4%. O’Loughlin said the old record goes back to 1989, with a completion pass rate of 91.7%.

“I think it is a paradigm shift in culture and philosophy at Saint Francis high school. It wouldn’t have happened without the players we have and the ability to accept transformation,” said Indians Head Football Coach Rodney Yates.

Madison Tice, St. Francis junior, said she was excited to witness a state record getting broken by the Indians.

The Indians offense rushed 188 yards and passed 429 yards. The Saint Francis defense held Hill City to only 79 yards.

Keanu Bussell, St. Francis senior, said cheering the team on and playing at the kickoff was the most exciting part of the game for him. "It was homecoming and we knew we needed to win big. We just played hard, did what we came to do, and went home with a big W. It's always nice to end early and have all our hard work paid off.”

Reagan Beims said the most exciting part of the game was when everyone knew the game would be over at halftime. “Because we could start the bonfire early and hang out with friends,” she said.

A tradition at Saint Francis is for the football players to let the girls they ask to homecoming wear their jersey all day and at the game. Reagan Beims, St. Francis sophomore, said she really enjoys this tradition.

“When we wear the football team’s jersey it’s not just a number on our cheeks, but something more special,” said Beims. “I wish we could wear them for every game.”

For the next varsity football game, the Indians will take on the Oberlin Red Devils at home on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.
