Lady Indians Defeat the Lady Rabbits

The Lady Indians varsity volleyball team defeated the Greeley County Lady Jackrabbits in Tribune on Monday, October 3. Though the Lady Indians did not execute as sharply has they had during the previous week's six matches, the Lady Indians defeated Greeley County (GC) in three straight sets. St. Francis won game one 25-14. Game two and three had identical scores of 25-17. There were no junior varsity matches as the Lady Jackrabbits only have 8 players on their roster.

Game one began with St. Francis taking a 4-1 lead on two kills by Hanna Bracelin and swing hit by Jessica Confer. The lead soon grew to 7-2 after an over-pass kill by Confer and an ace by Zoe Sundstrom. A kill by GC's Hanna Brandl stopped the momentum, and a series of miscues by the Lady Indians allowed the Lady Rabbits to close the gap to 7-6 . Another Confer kill was followed by a Bracelin ace to slow the Lady Rabbits. The Lady Indians reeled off five quick points, including a kill by Katie Schmid and two ace serves by Confer to lead 14-7. Kills by Lauren Johnson and Taighe Weeter, and two aces by Zoe Sundstrom, helped stretch the margin to 22-11. With everyone suited seeing court time, St. Francis won game one 25-14.

Game two found the Lady Indians executing poorly. The Lady Rabbits took a 0-5 lead before a kill by Zoe Sundstrom was recorded. A few more Lady Indian miscues advanced the score to 2-8, then 3-10, and eventually 4-12. St. Francis gained some momentum and eventually earned a seven-point run to close the gap to one point (11-12). In the run, Lauren Johnson, Hanna Bracelin, and Lindsey Johnson each recorded kills and Jessica Confer served two aces. A stuff by Lindsey Johnson tied the set at 13-all and eventually St. Francis took the lead (15-14) after a GC missed serve and attack error. Four of the next ten St. Francis scores came on GC miscues, but during the closing, Madi Tice served an ace, Karly Bandel scored on a dump-set, Bracelin served an ace, and Confer closed the contest with a kill. St. Francis won game two 25-17.

The Lady Indians opened game three with a 6-0 run behind some strong serves by Lauren Johnson. During the run, Hanna Bracelin recorded a tip-kill and Lauren an ace. GC closed the margin to 8-5 before missing a serve. Eventually the Lady Rabbits tied the set at 13-all. Leading 15-14, the Lady Indians scored six unanswered points to take a 21-14 lead. During the run, Bracelin recorded a kill and Karly Bandel served two aces. The Lady Indians won the third game 25-17, with the game ending after a stuff by Emileigh Dinkel and a kill by Hannah Zimbal.

St. Francis will play Wallace County and Triplains on Tuesday, October 11, in St. Francis.
