Saint Francis Senior Brock Waters reaches over the endzone with the ball to score an Indian touchdown. The Indians defeated the previously undefeated Rawlins County Friday to win the Yoke Bowl Friday night.

On Friday, October 7, the St. Francis varsity football team won a significant and extremely competitive game against Rawlins County. With a 52-6 win against the Buffaloes, in a game played in Atwood, the Indians earned the right to keep the Yoke Bowl.

The trophy is engraved with the following inscription: The Yoke Bowl is the affectionate name given to the annual football contest between Rawlins County High School (formerly Atwood) and St. Francis High School. This trophy, an oxen yoke, is a symbol of the tradition that has grown between these two communities, communities tied together by strong agricultural roots, an unbridled work ethic and a  profound sense of history and fair play. The yoke seems most ably to typify this relationship and therefore will from this day forward, be presented to this winning team of this annual contest. October 30, 2008

“I think the Yoke Bowl is a wonderful representation not only of these two small communities, but all of the small surroundings communities filled with hard working people,” said Devin Dinkel, St. Francis defensive coordinator.

At the end of the first quarter, the Indians pushed their way to a 14-0 lead. The boys picked it up in the second quarter with a 36-0 lead by the end of the quarter. The game was over by the third quarter with a score of 52-6. The Indians fought hard and gave it their all.

“We worked our butts off everyday in practice. The O-line played amazing and the skilled players played great, so it was a group effort tonight,” said Jeremiah Neitzel, Saint Francis senior.

“I think the rivalry between us and Atwood is a fun, healthy rivalship between the two of us, they are good players and they make us better,” said Ryan Grover, Saint Francis senior.

“The thing that impressed me the most was the intensity and enthusiasm with which our team performed. We had some younger kids get a chance to get on the field, and they made some great plays,” said Dinkel.

The next varsity football game will be on Friday, October 21, the Indians will take on Quinter at home for Senior Night at 7 p.m.
