Junior High Girls Defeat Lady Cats

On Monday, November 21, the junior high girls defeated the Wallace County Lady Wildcats by four points in both of the games played in St. Francis. The A-Team girls earned a 27-23 win. The B-Team girls won by a score of 20-16.

In A team action, the Lady Indians led most of the game by a narrow margin, falling behind only twice in the contest. Wallace County scored the first points of the contest on a shot in the lane by Alyssa Pierce. St. Francis answered with two free-throws by Talexa Weeter, an offensive rebound by McKenna Poling, and two free-throws by Emma Johnson. St. Francis lead 6-2 after one quarter of play.

Neither team scored early in the second period. Wallace County used a time-out to help adjust to the pressure defense applied by the Lady Indians at 3:54. An assist by Katie Wurm led to a mid-post score by Ellee Krien mid-way through the period. After a WC free-throw and a steal leading to a coast-to-coast lay-up, Emma Johnson again swished two free-throws. St. Francis led 10-7 at halftime after an offensive rebound score by WC's Breanna Medina.

Katie Wurm's shot from the left corner increased the Lady Indians' lead to five (12-7) early in the third period. Pierce followed with a long two from the top-of-the-key moments later. Kendalynn Miller's stick-back basket pulled the Lady Wildcats within one (12-11). McKenna Poling scored a fast-break basket on an assist from Emma Johnson, but the Lady Cats followed with another offensive rebound score by Makenna Chaney. At 3:24, St. Francis called time-out. With 3 minutes left in the third quarter, Wallace County took a 14-15 lead on a shot near the top-of-the-key. The Lady Indians responded well, scoring on an out-of-bounds play assist from Rian Zimbal to Talexa Weeter, an out-of-bounds play basket by Poling, and an assist from Lyden Lampe on Johnson's right corner shot at the buzzer. St. Francis led 21-15 after three quarters.

The Lady Indians extended their lead to 23-15 on a driving basket by Emma Johnson early in the final period. Wallace County then scored on a free-throw, a shot from the free-throw line, and an offensive rebound to narrow the advantage to 23-20. At 2:05, Johnson's assist led to a post basket by Jordyn Faulkender. Wallace County answered with a free-throw and another offensive rebound basket by Pierce. St. Francis called time-out with 27 seconds left, leading 25-23. The Lady Indians did not score on their next possession, and Wallace County rebounded the basketball and called time-out with 15 seconds left. Talexa Weeter earned a steal with 10 ticks left and was fouled on her way to the goal. With 5 seconds remaining, Johnson made the first of two free-throws. After the make, WC called time-out. Johnson sealed the win with the second free-throw. St. Francis won the A-Team game 27-23.

Alyssa Pierce led the Lady Wildcats with 8 points. Breanna Medina added 7 and Jessie Carman 6. WC made 3 of 6 from the line. St. Francis was led by Emma Johnson with 11 points. Others scoring for St. Francis included Talexa Weeter 4, McKenna Poling 4, Katie Wurm 4, Ellee Krien 2, and Jordyn Faulkender 2. The Lady Indians made 8 of 10 from the stripe.

In B-Team action, the teams were tied at 4-all after one period of play. Wallace County led 9-6 at halftime. The Lady Indians fought back in the second half to lead by one point (14-13) after three quarters of action. In the final period, Rian Zimbal scored four points and Hadleigh Hilt added two to increase the margin to the final score of 20-16.

Lady Indians scoring in the B-Team contest include Rian Zimbal 6, Ellee Krien 6, Lyden Lampe 4, Hadleigh Hilt 2, and Miah Hackney 2. Kylie Ryser led WC with 5 points.

The Lady Indians will play Greeley County in Tribune on November 29.
