Lady Indians Cruise To Easy Win

The Lady Indians easily defeated their opponents from Bethune, Colorado, on Tuesday, December 20, in high school basketball. The visiting Lady Bobcats had limited player numbers (7) and did not play a junior varsity game. The Lady Bobcats hustled hard throughout the varsity contest, but gave the Lady Indians little challenge in the varsity contest. The Lady Indians cruised to a 74-25 win.

The game opened with a basket by Lauren Johnson and a coast-to-coast drive by Taighe Weeter. Bethune's Kimberlie Schulte (Sr.) followed with a fast-break basket. After an early time-out by Bethune at 6:04, the Lady Indians scored two more baskets extending the lead to 7-2; the second of the two coming on a offensive rebound by Hanna Bracelin. Schulte answered with a lay-up and a steal-two trimming the lead to 7-6. Bracelin responded with a post basket and another offensive rebound score. A Lady Indian turnover set up a lay-up by Bethune's Daisy Barraza (Sr.) and triggered a St. Francis time-out at 3:21. After the time-out, Weeter scored on press offense and Lindsey Johnson scored on an offensive rebound. The Lady Bobcats earned a basket on well-executed press offense bringing the score to 15-10. The first quarter closed after an old-fashioned three-point play by Lindsey Johnson (offensive rebound), a free-throw by Bracelin, and a free-throw by Barraza for the Lady Cats. The Lady Indians led 19-11 after one quarter of play.

The Lady Indians opened the second period with a 21-0 run. The Lady Indians received scores from eight different players ( Lindsey Johnson, Taighe Weeter, Lauren Johnson, Zoe Sundstrom, Karly Bandel, Hanna Bracelin, Reagan Beims, and Emileigh Dinkel) during the run. The score quickly ballooned to 40-11. Late in the quarter, the Lady Bobcats earned an offensive rebound basket, but an assist by Weeter setup a fast-break basket by Dinkel to answer. The final two baskets of the quarter were scored by the Bobcats' Schulte. With everyone suited seeing plenty of playing time in the second period, the Lady Indians had extended their lead to 42-19.

The game began to deteriorate a bit in the second half as the Lady Bobcats endurance began to fade. Taighe Weeter scored two quick baskets to open the third period on assists from Hanna Bracelin an Zoe Sundstrom. Lauren Johnson scored on an offensive rebound at the 7 minute mark, and the Lady Bobcats soon called time-out thereafter. A assist by Lindsey Johnson led to an out-of-bounds play score by Emileigh Dinkel moving the scoreboard to 50-17. Bethune's Mickala Vaughn (Sr.) scored from the post, but the Lady Indians answered with an eight point run getting scores from Karly Bandel (drive), Lindsey Johnson (post, assist Dinkel), Jylian Laten, and Bracelin (offensive rebound). The score now stood at  58-19. The quarter ended with Bethune scoring the final two baskets of the quarter bringing the third period score to 58-23.

The final quarter was played with a running clock due to the 30-point spread. The Lady Indians continued to execute well and earned seven consecutive baskets before the Lady Bobcats scored again. The scores came on an offensive rebound score by Lauren Johnson, a right wing trey by Emileigh Dinkel (assist Lauren Johnson), a post basket by Taighe Weeter (assist Reagan Beims), a post basket by Zoe Sundstrom (assist Beims), and three fast-break baskets by Weeter (assists Jylian Laten and Sundstrom).
