Lady Indians Lose to Quinter

Earn 4th Place in NWKL Tourney

The St. Francis Lady Indians placed fourth in the Northwest Kansas League Basketball Tournament this past weekend. The Lady Indians were defeated by Quinter in the third place contest by a score of 31-50.

The contest was close throughout the first quarter and a half, but a 13-0 run by the Lady Bulldogs late in the second quarter gave Quinter an advantage that the could not be overcome. St. Francis opened the contest with a 5-0 run getting an opening free-throw from Reagan Beims, a stick-back basket by Hanna Bracelin, and score in the lane by Zoe Sundstrom (assist Bracelin). Quinter did not score until the 2:44 mark of the first period when 5' 10" junior Peyton Havlas sank one-of-two from the line. A Havlas post basket trimmed the lead to two points, but then an assist from Lindsey Johnson set up a right-corner trey by Bracelin. Sarah Bird (5' 5" senior) answered with a left-wing trey moving the score to 8-6. The quarter closed after a free-throw by Emileigh Dinkel with the Lady Indians leading 9-6.

Lindsey Johnson opened the second period with a post basket for St. Francis (assist Hanna Bracelin). Brooke Blackwill (5' 5" senior) answered for Quinter on a shot from the left-wing. St. Francis called time-out after a press-offense score by Taighe Weeter leading 13-8. Blackwill scored on an out-of-bounds play after the teams returned to action. Weeter followed with an offensive rebound basket (15-10). It would be the last score for the Lady Indians in the first half. At 4:39, Blake Selensky (5' 5" sophomore) sank two free-throws to initiate a 13-0 Quinter run. The Lady Indians' 16 first half turnovers were taking a toll. Though neither team was shooting very well, the extra possessions Quinter was receiving on SF miscues gave the Lady Bulldogs additional possessions. The teams went to the locker room with the Lady Indians trailing 15-23.

Reagan Beims scored on the first Lady Indian possession of the second half. An assist by Hanna Bracelin led to a Beims post score on the following possession trimming the deficit to 19-23. The basket would be the last score for the Lady Indians for several minutes. Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs would receive a top-of-the-key trey by Selensky, an out-of-bounds play score by Kylie Crist (5' 5" junior), an offensive rebound basket by Bird, plus two-additional free-throws. The run increased the deficit to 19-30. The run was finally halted by a baseline score by Beims (assist Lindsey Johnson). Quinter added the next three baskets; a trey by Bird plus  a trey and deuce by Rebekah Kitch (5' 5" junior). The scores increased the margin to 21-37. With 1:45 remaining in the third period, Lindsey Johnson scored on a baseline drive. Emileigh Dinkel then added two free-throws and a steal-two. The Lady Indians trailed 27-37 after three periods.

The Lady Indians did not earn a basket in the final period. Quinter opened the final period with another scoring run getting 9 unanswered points in the early minutes of the quarter. A few of the Lady Indians 11 second half turnovers occurred during the exchange. Mid-way through the period, the Lady Indians trailed 27-46. With 3:19 left in the game, Taighe Weeter drained consecutive free-throws to get the Lady Indians point total moving again. Hanna Bracelin added another free-throw about a minute later. Quinter's Evie Gruenbacher (5' 5" sophomore) scored the final four Quinter points. A final free-throw by Bracelin complete the games scoring. St. Francis lost to Quinter 31-50.

Quinter received balanced scoring from four players:  Havlas 11, Blackwill 9, Bird 9, and Greunbacher 9. The Lady Bulldogs made 12 of 19 from the the stripe.

Players scoring for St. Francis included:  Reagan Beims 8, Taighe Weeter 6, Hanna Bracelin 6, Emileigh Dinkel 5, Lindsey Johnson 4, and Zoe Sundstrom 2. St. Francis made 8 of 13 from the free-throw line.

The Lady Indians will play Rawlins County in St. Francis on Tuesday, January 24.
