Jr. High A-Team Defeats Goodland

The junior high volleyball teams competed with teams from Goodland on Tuesday, October 2, in St. Francis. Three matches were played with Goodland winning two of the three. The evening opened with the B team match. St. Francis gave the visitors a good challenge but lost in two sets 21-25, 23-25.

In A team action, St. Francis dominated the Goodland Lady Mustangs winning 25-10, 25-9. The Lady Indians only allowed one run of three points in the entire match controlling the action with aggressive serving, good passing, and some well-executed attacks. Though Goodland jumped out to a 2-4 lead in the first set, the lead soon disappeared as the Lady Indians reeled off six straight points before a Goodland time-out stopped the action at 9-4. The early lead was the only advantage Goodland held in the two-set match. Behind some consistent serves by McKenna Poling (including one ace), the Lady Indians recorded kills by Ellie Krien and Talexa Weeter in the run. Leading 13-7, the next Lady Indian run of six points featured a kill by Mia Morrow, three aces by Jordan Faulkender, and a strong hit by Jesslynn Houtman that the Lady Mustangs could not return. The flurry moved the score to 19-7 before a missed serve ended run. The next St. Francis run of 4 points included two kills by Morrow. Though the Lady Indians gave up 4 points on missed serves, they easily defeated the Lady Mustangs in set one 25-10.

In set two, a 6-point Lady Indian run moved the score to 7-1. The run partially resulted from a tip-kill by Talexa Weeter, a tip and a kill by Ellie Krien, and an ace by Mia Morrow. A three-point run including a deep-tip by Weeter moved the score to 10-3. The next SF run, five points in length, moved the scoreboard to 15-4 and included a deep-tip by Morrow, two aces by Weeter, and a kill by Jesslynn Houtman. Goodland then earned a three-point run, their only one of the match, on a communication error by the Lady Indians and two strong serves before missing a service attempt. Jordan Faulkender's serves led to two more Lady Indian points (including 1 ace). Jesslynn Houtman nearly served out the match serving six consecutive points (including 3 aces). Morrow's over-pass kill ended the match. St. Francis won the second set 25-9.

The Lady Indian C team fought hard but lost a very close three-set match. The scores were 25-19, 21-25, and 15-13.

The junior high teams will play in Hoxie on Thursday, October 5.
