Junior High Girls Defeat Decatur Community

The junior high volleyball teams defeated Decatur Community (DC) in St. Francis on Thursday, October 12. The B team opened the evening with a three-set win over the visiting Lady Red Devils 25-15, 17-25, 15-11. The JV team controlled the action in set one, but then fell behind in set two and the match went to the deciding set. In set three, the Lady Indians and Lady Devils volleyed back-and-forth but eventually the Lady Indians superior passing and serving took its toll and the Lady Indians won 15-11.

The A team followed with a 25-10, 21-25, 15-9 victory. St. Francis dominated set one. Mia Morrow started the contest with an ace serve, and the Lady Indians led 6-1 early. A three-point run by the Lady Red Devils trimmed the margin to 7-5. A kill by Talexa Weeter stopped the run and started a 6-point run for St. Francis. In the run, Talexa served two aces and Jesslynn Houtman recorded a kill. The outburst gave St. Francis a 13-5 advantage. The next Lady Indian run, 6 points in length, stretched the margin to 23-9. The run included 3 aces by Morrow and kills by Weeter, Houtman, and McKenna Poling. St. Francis won set one 25-10.

It looked like the 2nd set would follow a similar pattern as the Lady Indians jumped out to a 5-0 lead behind some strong serves by Mia Morrow. Mia recorded three aces and a kill along the way before missing a serve. A 4-point run by DC closed the advantage to 7-5 before a kill by Talexa Weeter stopped the run. The Lady Devils soon added a 5-point run getting two kills by Brynna Addleman (8th) and an ace by Breckyn Jensen (8th) to lead 8-10. A missed serve stopped the run, but DC scored on the next three volleys to lead 9-13. A 3-point run by St. Francis, all coming on ace serves by Jordyn Faulkender, eventually recovered the lead for the Lady Indians (14-13). The teams battled back-and-forth to a 19-19 tie. In the last few volleys, Decatur Community made less passing and attack errors than the Lady Indians and won the set 21-25.

St. Francis jumped out to a large lead in set three leading 11-3 at one point. The lead resulted from some excellent play by the Lady Indians including three aces my Mia Morrow, two by McKenna Poling, and two by Ellee Krien. Talexa Weeter earned three kills during the barrage also. A stretch of passing and attack errors by the Lady Indians allowed DC to close within three (11-8) before the Lady Indians completed the win 15-9.

The young Lady Indians will play in the NWKL Tournament on Tuesday, October 17. (See feature article regarding the tournament.)
