Local FFA Teams Compete

Last week on November 9th, FFA members went to compete at Hays, Kansas, in Food Science and Dairy Foods. Mason Schmid, Coy DeWaal, Reagan Beims, Emileigh Dinkel, Marlo Jensen, Wyatt Hackler, and Jylian Laten were the seven participants that competed for both teams. Overall in Food Science, the team placed 4th, and Coy placed individually 3rd. In Dairy Foods the team placed 4th as well.

In Food Science, each individual had to complete two tests; mathematics and terms. They then proceeded on to the triangle test, which is quite simply, which of the three foods/drinks are the same and which is different. After three triangle tests they moved on to the aroma test. The contestants have a list of different aromas and only five on the list are on the table which they have to smell to find out what they are. The final test the participants had to complete was food safety. There was five pictures on a table and they had to know what was wrong with the picture.

The second contest the team participated in was Dairy Foods. This contest also required members to take two tests; mathematics and terms. They had to identify cheese samples based on appearance, taste, and smell. The members also used their senses to distinguish milk defects, including rancid, bitter, acidic, and no defect. They had to test samples to figure out different fat contents.

CDE’s allow members get a glimpse of careers in these areas and build their FFA resume. Members of these teams will have another chance to compete in May at the State CDE’s. The next competition on the agenda is Vet Science CDE in Stockton at the end of the month.
