The St. Francis coaching staff has selected Tiernan Poling, Luin Norris, and Trayton Doyle as our co-wrestlers of the week. All three of these young men were able to win championships at the 55^th annual Bob Smith Invitational.

Coach’s Comments:

"This past weekend we traveled to Wray, Colorado, to compete in the Bob Smith/Wray Invitational. We have competed in this tournament for a number of years and is one that I enjoy ending our “pre-season” on. The first part of our schedule is pretty front heavy with Colorado competition. We like to wrestle and compete against schools that we typically will not see as the season progresses. This season is pretty short and these guys all have taken some tremendous strides. We had some matches this weekend that I know we would love to have back, we have matches where we had to grit our teeth and fight it out, and we had matches where we flat dominated. This group of kids is special, they really value their relationships with their team mates, and they all have a very special family bond and it’s been a lot of fun. We still are building and as the season continues to progress this group will continue to get better. 

We will practice this week and then these guys will get some time off and celebrate Jesus’s birth with their families and friends. I love this group; they understand the big picture and what life is truly about. We are going to have a fun year, and they will all be ready once the new year rolls around. We have to get some kids healthy and keep working hard and keep having fun.

Individually, Perla Yanez had a pretty tough day, but she continues to battle. Right now, her biggest battle is she’s still trying to figure out what type of wrestler she is. She’s still a little passive in matches and unsure of herself but, the more experience she gets the more confidence she will have. She’s a great kid and I’m glad she made the decision to be a part of our wrestling family. Each week she continues to get better and truly has come a long way. Aaron White had a tough day and is still making some pretty tough mistakes which is good because you need to make them in order to learn. I think this break has come at a pretty good time for him. I know he has been frustrated with his season, so I think its crucial for him to have some time here to get his head right. He’s getting better just needs to keep working hard and trust in the bigger picture. Garin Cooper really had a good weekend and was in great position to win a championship on Saturday. He had missed a couple of days of practice due to illness and still wasn’t feeling very well on Saturday. For him to have the day he had and really have to dig down deep in not one but two overtime matches tell you the kind of grit this kid has. He has been a lot of fun to watch this season and he will only get better. Tiernan Poling has come a long way just in the past year. I look at Tiernan as a kid who has a real shot at having lot of success not only this season but, the post season as well. We talk a lot about redemption matches, and the importance of them; the Wray kid that Tiernan beat in the semi-finals this weekend actually pinned Tiernan two short weeks ago at our home tournament. That just shows that if you put in the time and work in you can make vast improvements in a short amount of time. I’m really pleased with Tiernan and how he has competed these past two weeks. He is still figuring out the type of wrestler he wants to be, but I have a lot of confidence in him. Tyson Poling really is doing a great job. Every match he has wrestled this season has been against a quality kid. I know it can get frustrating wrestling tough match after tough match but, competing against that type of competition is how you get better. You learn a lot from quality losses and Tyson has had nothing but quality losses. It doesn’t make a lot of sense referring to losses as a good thing but, I truly believe that is how you learn. As this season moves along Tyson will only get better. He has the right mindset and the physical tools to be special. Cody Baxter has had a tough two weeks here. Much like Aaron I think this break is coming at a good time for Cody just to clear his mind and regroup. Wrestling is a tough sport, and its hard to lose matches you know you shouldn’t. Its important for Cody to never doubt his ability, because he has a lot of it. He has made some mistakes but, they all are correctable. It’s important for him to continue to focus on the bigger picture. Any time you step on the mat it’s important but all these tournaments are building blocks to the ultimate goal. Shadyron Blanka really has turned a corner these past two weeks. Every time he steps out on the mat he continues to get better and better. What I believe has changed for him is the fact that he is starting to believe in himself more now than he did earlier this season. I believe he has all the tools it takes to put together not just a successful season but, a successful career. He still has things he needs to correct, but overall, I am really pleased with where he is heading. He will be a lot of fun to watch grow and develop moving forward. Luin Norris really has put together a great preseason. He is a testament to what a success story looks like. When he first came into this program he was pretty green and had a lot to learn. What we are seeing now is a kid who has stuck with it, continued to work hard, and just put the time in. He is in a great position to continue to have success moving forward. He is wrestling with a confidence that I have never seen from him, he flat out dominated this weekend. He’s been a lot of fun to watch. Seth Hilt these last two weeks may be our most improved wrestler. He has had a habit of being pretty timid in matches and last weekend at Limon something clicked with him and he has started to open up more. He is a strong kid, who works hard and I think this sport suits him really well. Like everyone he has things he needs to improve on which is always to be expected, but I am really proud of him. Trayton Doyle was back in action this weekend for the first time in a year. It was great to see him compete again and do something I know he loves to do. He was very dominant and took care business. He wrestled with a lot of emotion and I know this was a weekend he had been looking forward to for a very long time. Him and Luin both are great leaders for our younger guys and it was a treat to have them both in the line-up together again. Trayton has big goals I know he wants to accomplish this season and this weekend was the first step in achieving those goals. You could tell he had been off the mat awhile but, with his work ethic and determination he can accomplish anything.

Our pre-season is now done, right now these kids will get a couple of weeks off from competition. This break comes at a good time for us. Anytime you can spend time with family and celebrate the pure joys in life it’s always good. As we go into break I just want to continue to thank our alumni and wrestling fans who support this group. From our wrestling family to yours I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas!! Enjoy this time with family and be thankful for all of your blessings."
