A-Boys Defeat Buffs

The A-team Indians defeated Rawlins County in junior high basketball on Thursday, November 29, in Atwood. It was the only game won by the Indians during the evening as the B-team and C-team both were soundly defeated by the Buffaloes. St. Francis lost the B-team contest 13-52 and the C-team game 1-26.

Though the A-team boys struggled from the free-throw line in the final quarter, they held the Buffaloes to 4 points in the final period and won a close come-from-behind contest. Brady Beckman scored 8 points for the Buffs in the opening period to help Rawlins County take a 9-15 advantage after one period of play. Beckman did not score again in the contest. In the second period, St. Francis received 7 points from Ben Busse, 6 from Preston Witzel, and 3 from Colton Raile to lead 25-23 at halftime.

St. Francis added 7 points to the scoreboard in the third period, but Rawlins County earned four baskets (treys from Jayden Reed and Brandon Chvatal) to take a slim one-point lead (33-32) at the third quarter break. St. Francis held Rawlins County to two scores in the final period; a basket by Reed and one by Joshua Popp. The Indians received three buckets from Colton Raile and one from Chris Espino as well as two free-throws by Preston Witzel to earn a 42-37 win. The Indians made 2 of 13 from the line in the final stanza.

Four players scored for the Indians in the contest; Ben Busse 15, Colton Raile 13, Preston Witzel 10, and Chris Espino 4. The Indians were 8 of 24 from the free-throw line. Rawlins County was led in scoring by Jayden Reed with 14 points. Joshua Popp and Brady Beckman each scored 8 points. The Buffs were 0 of 3 from the stripe.

In B-team play, St. Francis trailed 2-13 after one period and 4-29 at halftime. The Indians earned 7 points in the third period, but trailed 11-43 at the third quarter break. The B-team Indians lost to Rawlins County 13-52.

Connor Wachsmann scored 8 points in the contest for the Indians. Aiden Fernandez added 3 and Dawson Rose 2. The Indians made 3 of 6 from the line. Rawlins County was led by Braxton Dixon with 11 and Joshua Popp with 10.

Dallas Laten's second-quarter free-throw was the only score the C-team Indians could earn in the two-period C-team contest. The Indians were 1 of 7 from the line in the game. Rawlins County led 0-11 after one quarter and won the contest 1-26. Rawlins County was led in scoring by Abraham Crespo and Jayden Ashford each with 6 points. The Buffs made 1 of 4 from the free-throw line.

St. Francis will play Greeley County, in St. Francis, on Thursday, December 6.
