Lady Indians Crush Lady Titans

Lady Titans Held Scoreless In 2nd Half

The Lady Indians won their opening game of the season in convincing fashion defeating the Triplains-Brewster (TPB) Lady Titans 48-9 in the opening round of the Sagebrush Invitational Tournament. The Lady Indians held the Titans scoreless in the second half while totaling 24 points and playing everyone on the roster. In opening round competition in the free-throw contest, Emma Johnson made 20 of 25 representing the Lady Indians.

St. Francis opened the contest on an eight-point run getting a left-baseline jumper from Karly Bandel to start the scoring. After free-throws by Hannah Zimbal and Lindsey Johnson, a Zimbal steal and assist led to a layup by Lauren Johnson. The final basket of the run, came on an out-of-bounds play assist from Bandel to Lindsey Johnson. The Lady Titans earned their first basket on a steal-two by Samantha Cozza (5' 4" So.). At the 2:30 mark of the first period, St. Francis called time-out for strategy. After a free-throw by TPB's Latasha Felhoelter (5' 6" Sr.), Bandel added a left-wing jumper extending the margin to 10-3. The final two scores of the first period came on a charity shot by Cozza and a layup by Alondra Gomez (assist Emma Johnson). St. Francis led 12-4 at the first quarter break.

The Lady Indians' defense continued to cause numerous turnovers by the Lady Titans in the second period, but the Lady Indians failed to capitalize many of them due to missed shots. An assist by Lindsey Johnson led to a top-of the-key deuce by Emma Johnson to open the second period. . Alondra Gomez followed with an offensive rebound basket stretching the lead to 16-4. At 5:03, St. Francis used their second time-out. The Lady Indians continued their run receiving a free-throw by Lauren Johnson, a free-throw area jumper by McKenna Poling (assist Mia Morrow), and a free-throw by Hannah Zimbal. The Lady Indians' ten-point run had moved the  advantage to 20-4. Lady Titan Lisabeth Fellhoelter (5' 6" Fr.) banked in a top-of-the-key trey reducing the margin a bit, but St. Francis answered with two buckets by Emma Johnson; one on an offensive rebound and one from the post (assist Lindsey Johnson). The final score of the half came on a turnover by the Lady Indians which led to a layup by Cozza. St. Francis led 24-9 at halftime.

The Lady Indians turned up the defensive pressure a bit more in the second half. The result was a complete disruption of the Lady Titans offensive strategy, numerous turnovers, and a 24-0 second half blanking of the Titans by the Lady Indians. Though the Lady Indians did not shoot especially well, the defensive disruption caused many open possessions for the Lady Titans and extra attempts for the Lady Indians. St. Francis opened the third period with a right-wing trey by Emma Johnson (assist Lauren Johnson). At 5:15, Hannah Zimbal added an offensive rebound basket. Alondra Gomez earned a steal-two a bit later. Lindsey Johnson chipped in a free-throw and then set up a right-baseline shot by Karly Bandel with an assist. A free-throw area basket by Bandel, and an offensive rebound basket by Jordyn Faulkender completed the third quarter scoring. St. Francis led 38-9 after three periods of play.

The first basket of the fourth quarter, a layup by Karly Bandel coming on an assist by Lauren Johnson, started the running clock. Lauren's next assist led to another Bandel score. Lindsey Johnson then added an offensive rebound basket increasing the margin to 44-9. With everyone suited receiving playing time, the Lady Indians continued to look sharp. Jordyn Faulkender scored on an out-of bounds play assist from Emma Johnson; and at 2:36, St. Francis took one final time-out to get everyone into the contest. The final Lady Indian score came on an assist by Mia Morrow leading to a bucket by Lyden Lampe. St. Francis defeated Triplains-Brewster 48-9.

St. Francis was led in scoring by Karly Bandel with 12 points. Emma Johnson added 9, and Lindsey Johnson and Alondra Gomez each chipped in 6. Others scoring for St. Francis were Hannah Zimbal 4, Jordyn Faulkender 4, Lauren Johnson 3, Lyden Lampe 2, and McKenna Poling 2. The Lady Indians made 5 of 12 from the free-throw line and committed 9 fouls. TPB was led in scoring by Samantha Cozza with 5 points. The Lady Titans were 2 of 4 from the stripe and committed 12 fouls.

The Lady Indians will play Wallace County in the championship semi-final game at 6:00 p.m. in the North Gym at Brewster High School on Friday, December 7. Wallace County defeated Weskan by a score of 43-28 on Monday evening. In other girls games in the tournament, Golden Plains defeated Wichita County 45-16 and Cheylin defeated Logan 47-24.
