Jesse Baxter, sophomore, sinks the free-throw during an intense overtime game against Logan. The Indians got the lead in overtime and didn't give it back, sealing a third place victory in the Sagebrush tournament in Brewster. “Free-throws are one of the most important shots in a game like this,” says Baxter.

After only five practices before their first game, the Indians were ready to play in the first game of the season in the Sagebrush Basketball Tournament. The Indians’ first game was played against the Weskan Coyotes.

“We played really good for our first game of the season and can only improve from that,” said Colton Neitzel, sophomore. The Indians took their first victory Monday night in Brewster, 52-25.

The Indians’ second game of the tournament was Friday night. This game against the Wichita County Indians was a very intense and challenging game for the St. Francis Indians. At the end of the first quarter, the Wichita County was seven points ahead leading 15-8.

The Wichita County Indians outmatched us and would not let us score often. By the end of the first half, the St. Francis Indians were falling behind 37-17, but were still fighting hard. The final score was 58-31 with Wichita County taking the victory.

“We showed a lot of heart in the fourth quarter, even though we were down. Overall I think the team realized what we need to improve on in the upcoming weeks,” said Brady Dinkel, junior.

Though the St. Francis Indians fought hard, they were not able to overcome the Wichita County Indians.

In the final round of the Sagebrush Tournament, the Indians were playing the Logan County Trojans. The Indians were competing for the third place medals. While competing, the Indians were not able to make their shots fall. By the end of the first quarter, St. Francis was in the lead, 12-4. The game became very intense when the Trojans took the lead of three points by half time, 19-16. St. Francis led 26-25 at the end of the third quarter and was tied to the Trojans 34-34 at the end of the fourth. In overtime, the Indians quickly got the lead and kept it, resulting in a win, 44-41.
