Scholars Bowl Regional Results
Last Thursday in Atwood, the Scholars' Bowl team competed against 13 other high schools at the regional meet. Seniors EmmaLee Archuleta, Mason Schmid, and Shelby Wolff, juniors Sam Dovico and Isaiah Lee, and sophomore Brady Schoenrogge comprised the team. Audrey Meyer served as statistician. Missing from the team were Seth Mills, Emma Hackler, and Doyle Easter who graciously bowed out so that other students could play.
In round one, with Mason Schmid serving as captain, we lost 50-20 to Northern Valley. Round two was also a loss to Weskan with a score of 40-20. Things began to look up the the Sainty Scholars in round 3 against Wheatland-Grinnell where we squeaked out a 40-30 win after winning a tie-breaker. In round 4, we whomped Cheylin with a score of 70-10! Round 5 brought us our third defeat against Golden Plains with a final score of 30-20. We rallied and came back in round 6 and defeated Logan with a score of 30-15.
So after 6 rounds of regular play, we were 3-3. We doubted whether that was good enough to take us to the play-off round, but because there were several other teams with a 3-3 record, we were still in it. After adding up the total points each team had scored, we placed second in our pool! It was on to the play-off rounds.
EmmaLee Archuleta acted as captain in the first round of the semi-finals. The round ended in a 20-20 tie. Mason Schmid got the tie-breaker right, securing the win. In round 2, we lost to Hill City by one question, 60-50. Round 3 brought some drama from the Atwood team in the form of several challenges over foreign language questions. But in the end, we prevailed 20-10. We routed the Logan team 50-0 in round 4 and lost to Wheatland-Grinnell 40-25. Final record in the after play was 3-2, enough for a third place finish. But we were so close to first, we ached.
Scholars' Bowl is truly a team effort, but the MVPs for this meet were surely Brady Schoenrogge and Sam Dovico. Both had a spectacular meet! I am so proud of this team. They have improved nearly every week, and to place third out of 14 teams is an accomplishment to be proud of. They were able to do so because they have coalesced into a true team over the course of the season. I will sorely miss our seniors, but the juniors will be seasoned veterans by next year.
