Lady Indians Crush Lady Titans
It wasn't much of a contest. They Lady Indians jumped out to a large early lead and never looked back. After holding a 17-point lead after one quarter of play, the Lady Indians rolled to a 61-13 win over the Triplains-Brewster Lady Titans in St. Francis on Tuesday, February 5. There was no junior varsity contest.
Karly Bandel opened the contest with a quick deuce. Triplains-Brewster's (T-B) Samantha Cozza (5' 4" So.) answered from the right wing. It would be the only basket the Lady Titans would score in the first period. Moments later, an assist from Emma Johnson set up a trey by Lauren Johnson. After a free-throw by Hannah Zimbal, Bandel added another trey (assist Lauren Johnson). Lindsey Johnson then added a deuce followed by consecutive free-throws by Zimbal and Bandel. The margin was now 15-2. Late in the quarter, a steal-assist by McKenna Poling lead to a basket by Mia Morrow. The final score of the first period came on an assist by Bandel to Morrow on a fast-break. St. Francis led 19-2 after one period of play.
The outcome of the game had been decided. St. Francis removed their full-court pressure and it made play a bit easier for the Lady Titans. The Lady Titans totaled 19 turnovers in the first half of the contest. Karly Bandel's trey from the top-of-the-key began the second period scoring. T-B's Lora Peterson (5' 7" Fr.) followed with a basket from the post. After an offensive rebound score by Hannah Zimbal, St. Francis used their first time-out at 6:34 leading by 20 (24-4). After returning to action, the Lady Indians scored a press-offense basket on an assist from Bandel to Zimbal. Lindsey Johnson followed with a stick-back basket, and Zimbal added a steal-two (30-4). Macey Lamb (5' 6" Fr.) then banked in a deuce from the right-elbow for the Lady Titans. An out-of-bounds play basket by Lindsey Johnson (assist Bandel) answered. Jordyn Faulkender then chipped in a free-throw for the Lady Indians. Brianna Hanson's (5' 7" So.) offensive rebound was answered by a shot by Lauren Johnson in the lane (assist Bandel). St. Francis led at halftime 35-8.
St. Francis opened the third period continuing a run that would reach 21 points before the Lady Titans would score again. Karly Bandel and Lauren Johnson each scored driving baskets to open the third period. After a free-throw by Lindsey Johnson, Bandel scored a lay-up after a steal and assist by Emma Johnson. Jordyn Faulkender then added seven consecutive points mostly from close range. Alondra Gomez's steal-two was followed by an assist from McKenna Poling that led to the final basket in the run by Bandel. St. Francis led 53-8. Late in the third period, T-B's Latasha Felthoelter added a free-throw and Peterson earned a post basket. St. Francis led 54-11 after three periods of play.
The final period was played with a running clock due to the 30-point rule. St. Francis substitute players received the majority of the playing time. An assist from Lauren Johnson led to a basket in the lane by Hannah Zimbal. Johnson then added a shot from the baseline. Zimbal returned the assist favor on a left-wing jumper by Johnson. The Lady Titans earned their sixth and final basket of the contest with just over four minutes left to play; a post score by Hanson. With 4:05 left in the game, T-B took their first time-out. The only additional basket was a baseline jumper by Mia Morrow. St. Francis cruised to a 61-13 win over the Triplains-Brewster Lady Titans.
St. Francis moved their season record to 9-6. Triplains-Brewster fell to 1-10.
Karly Bandel led the Lady Indians in scoring with 16 points. Lauren Johnson and Hannah Zimbal each added 11. Jordyn Faulkender chipped in 8 points, Lindsey Johnson 7, Mia Morrow 6, and Alondra Gomez 2. The Lady Indians made 8 of 18 from the stripe, had 10 fouls, and committed only 10 turnovers.
Triplains-Brewster was led by Lora Peterson and Brianna Hanson each with 4 points. The Lady Titans committed 29 turnovers, 12 fouls, and made 1 of 4 from the stripe.
St. Francis will play Wallace County in St. Francis on Thursday, February 7. The evening will also be Senior Night for St. Francis. On Friday, February 8, the Lady Indians will travel to Oberlin to compete with Decatur Community.
