Two Qualify For State Discussion Meet

On March 27th two St. Francis FFA members went to Colby for the Farm Bureau discussion meet. As individuals, Senior Echoe Lennox placed 1st and Senior Mason Schmid placed 2nd. The two placed first as a team and won $300 from the Kansas Farm Bureau. According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, “Discussion meet competitive event simulates a committee meeting where discussion and active participation are expected from each participant. This competition is evaluated on an exchange of ideas and information on a predetermined topic. Participants build basic discussion skills, develop a keen understanding of important agricultural issues and explore how groups can pool knowledge to reach consensus and solve problems.”

“The beginning of the first round was nerve racking but after awhile I was more comfortable and confident,” said Lennox.

Echoe and Mason will be competing at the state-level discussion meet in May. They both look forward to ending their FFA careers with the many accomplishments they have earned and are very glad to represent the St. Francis chapter at state.

“My gut twisted before the round began. When we started, the audience seemed to disappear. It was like discussing a topic that everyone was passionate about. Placing second was a good surprise and going to state in May will be a good way to end my FFA career,” said Schmid.
