Junior High Girls Basketball Tournament Completed
A-Team 6th; B-Team 4th
The Northwest Kansas League junior high girls basketball tournament began on Monday, February 22. The teams were seeded by record for both the A-Team and B-Team tournaments.
The first round games were played at the sites of the four higher seeded teams. The St. Francis A-team traveled to Goodland for their first round game on February 22. The Goodland girls defeated the Lady Indians by a score of 18-46. Goodland jumped out to a 2-10 lead after one quarter and led 10-26 at halftime. In the third period, the young Lady Indians could only score two points and trailed 12-37 after three quarters. Goodland won the game 18-46. Bailey Merklin led the Lady Indians in scoring with 5 points. The A-team will now play Oberlin at 2:00 PM (CT) on Thursday in the junior high gym in Goodland.
The B-team Lady Indians traveled to Hoxie on Monday. The B-team won their game against Hoxie by a score of 22-20.
The final rounds of the A-Team tournament were played in Goodland on Thursday, February 25, while the B-Team tournament concluded in Oakley. Both teams played two games on Thursday.
The A-Team defeated Decatur Community in the consolation semifinal game 21-15. The Lady Indians trailed by one (3-4) after one quarter and were tied 7-7 at haftime. In the third quarter, the girls gained a six point advantage (15-9) and went on to win 21-15. In the 5th place game, the Lady Indians played hard and were narrowly defeated by Rawlins County. The game was tied after one quarter (3-3), but the Lady Indians trailed 11-12 at the halftime buzzer. Rawlins Co. led by three (17-20) after three periods of play, but the Lady Indians fought back and tied the game at 25, sending the game into overtime. The Lady Indians did not score in overtime and lost a close contest 25-29. The A-team girls placed 6th in the tournament.
The B-team lost both of their games on Thursday. The girls led Goodland 13-12 at halftime, but struggled in the second half to lose 18-36. In the third place game, Colby led 5-18 at halftime and went on to win the game 13-33. The B-team girls placed 4th in the tournament.
