2019-2020 Graduation Speech by Audrey Meyer

As most of you know, on March 17th, 2020, Governor Laura Kelly canceled school. Seniors overwhelmed with senioritis came to the realization that their last day of high school had flown by without them even knowing. Their last day to goof around like high school students, walk the oh-so familiar halls lined with perfectly tacky, yellow lockers, say good morning to their teachers (like they always did), and hug their friends that tend to be taken advantage of, all slipped by without a trace. We lost the last sweet moments we assumed were promised. We didn’t get to leave each class with tears in our eyes. We didn’t get to hear the last advice our teachers had to give us. We didn’t get to tell everyone how much we loved them or how far we’ve come because of them.

Many wonderful things were lost that fateful Tuesday. However, this isn’t unique to just Saint Francis. The ‘Rona took away many good things all around the world. Yet, despite them all, we, as a community are overcoming it. Saint Francis is special because of the people sitting with us today.. It’s July. It’s not ideal, but we’re extremely grateful for your company. You are the people who have gotten us to this point. We’re graduating as a tight knit class, each one of us from different backgrounds, surrounded by the people we care about most. What more could any of us ask for? Our class really is lucky. Thank you for the endless support. Welcome to the graduation ceremony of 2020.
