Coach Loyd's Comments:

After a couple of weeks of practice time, the St. Francis junior high wrestling team had their first competition in Oakley on January 22.  I know talking with the majority of the kids, they had some jitters for their first competition, but I felt like they all did a good job of competing hard.  This is a young and green group, with quite a few of them never having wrestled before.  So, it was encouraging to see them step out of their comfort zone and go compete in something new.  We still have a lot to learn and quite a bit of technique that we still need to cover. A lot of the mistakes that were made were mainly due to the fact that we hadn’t shown it yet.  However, it’s always encouraging to see kids who may not have a lot of experience have a sense of “feel” and mat awareness; knowing where they’re at, and when to hip in, etc.  The goal as we move forward is to always improve, work hard, wrestle hard, and have lots of fun.  I really do like this group of kids.  We have good leadership skills in this team.  They all work pretty hard and have a willingness to learn.  We preach to them a lot about wrestling hard and scoring a lot of points.  The technique side of wrestling is something you can fix; the effort is one you really can’t.  The effort is there with this group.  Just like anything in life, in order to get good at something, it takes practice and time.  I know this group will continue to get better, and I look forward to watching them grow as this season unfolds.

Individually, Will Keller had a little hiccup in his first match of the season.  I don’t think he was quite ready right out of the gate, but he was able to respond well in his next match and secured a dominant win.  Will works hard and has really done a good job of stepping into a leadership role on this team.  Wyatt Westfahl had a good day, going 2-1.  He is a kid who you know will always give 100% effort.  There are certain positions that he needs to be a little more patient in, but I like his intensity, and it's definitely one of his strengths.   Keyfyr Dinkel doesn’t have a lot of experience, but he does have a natural feel to him.  He can get into some bad situations but manages to get out of them due to his having a sense of mat awareness of where his hips need to be.  He has a lot of tools to work with and will be one to watch.  I’ve been really impressed with the development of Taysen Ludowese.  He very well could have won 2 of his 3 matches had he had more experience.  But this kid has a great attitude and really wants to get better.  He had never wrestled until last year, and to see how far he’s come in a year has been exciting.  Coltynnn Ludowese had a good day as well.  This was his first time ever wrestling, and he battled tough.  He’s a very good kid whom I have really gotten to enjoy getting to know.  He has picked things up relatively quickly.  He’s a coachable kid who listens well; he will only continue to improve. Alex Olivares is another one who had never wrestled before, and he ran into a couple of buzz saws, but he did very well.  Alex is fearless, and he works hard.  I love his attitude; he is always giving effort.  He’s a gifted athlete, and once he develops some confidence in a couple of moves, he’s going to score a lot of points.  Landyn Wilson is a tough kid.  He has a very good mind to be successful in this sport.  He picks up techniques very quickly and is a good student of the sport.  I think with more time and development, he is going to have a lot of success in this sport.  He was competing against some pretty tough kids who just had a little more maturity, which is huge in junior high athletics. Carson Ross had a very dominant day, pinning both of his opponents.  Carson is another one who has a strong desire to learn and be the very best he can be.  He has a lot of natural skills and is another one who has a very bright future in this sport.  He is naturally a very hard worker and a good leader, and that will take him a long way.  I am excited to watch him grow and get better.  Cooper Buffington competed tough.  He has a lot of tools to work with.  He’s very strong and long and is starting to understand how to use his length to his advantage.  He’s very good on his feet and rides tough on top.  He has some things to clean up and correct. I was very happy with how he wrestled for his first time out in junior high wrestling.

Riley Siegfried wrestled some very tough girls who have a lot of experience.  Riley has wrestled with some little kids, so she has an idea of what she’s doing.  Her biggest thing right now is that confidence piece, and that just comes with time and experience.  She does a really good job in practice and takes the time to make sure she is doing things right.  Billeigh Lampe had a dominant day.  She wrestled some tough girls, and the matches weren’t really all that close.  Bill controlled the matches from start to finish.  She’s gotten a lot better at getting to her positions and controlling the pace of the match.  She’s another good leader we have and does a good job helping Riley.  Those two have been very good for each other.
