Derek Queen Wins Cheyenne County Spelling Bee

St. Francis was pleased to host the 2008 Cheyenne County Spelling Bee. The spelling bee was held in the St. Francis Grade School Gym on February 6, 2008. This year's contest was sponsored by the Great Bend Tribune. Bruce Swihart served as the announcer with Roseanna Underwoood, Kari Gilliand, and Hoagie Carmichael serving as judges. Students in grades 4-8 participated. There were three contestants from each grade from each school. Participants were selected by spelling activities held in the respective classrooms throughout the school year.
Students selected to represent St. Francis were:
4th Grade: Jude Faulkender, Lane Hobrock, and Sydney Sundstrom
5th Grade: Shakotah Blanka, Cade Bracelin, and Kalin Ritchey (alternate Valerie Wurm)
6th Grade: Derek Queen, Mason Schiltz, and Aly Schlepp (alternate Erik Hart)
7th Grade: Foster Grant, Ally Northrup, and Sarah Whitmore
8th Grade: Tilyn Bell, Christina Schoenrogge, and Logan Whitmore
The winner of this year's contest was Derek Queen. Erik Hart was the the runner up. Derek will now represent Cheyenne County in the state spelling bee. Great job!
