Boys End Season at Leoti

The Indian basketball season came to a close on Monday evening, February 28th. The boys team was defeated by an aggressive Wichita County team in Leoti 46-69. The Indians concluded the 2010-11 season with a record of 8-13.

The Indians got off to a poor start and fell behind by twelve points in the first few minutes of the contest. The Indians first nine possessions in the game had the following results: airball, turnover, offensive foul, turnover, turnover, missed shot, turnover, missed shot, and missed shot. On the last missed shot, Matt Tygart grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Matt made one of the charity shots for the Indians first point of the game with 2:50 remaining in the first period. By then, the Indians trailed 1-12. Dylan Peter scored on the next two Indian possessions to cut the deficit to 5-14. It looked like the Indians might recover, but the Indians trailed 8-20 at the quarter break.

The Indians seemed sluggish on offense and defense. Wichita County crashed the boards on both ends of the floor, and the Indians had trouble scoring or stopping the opponents from shooting until a basket was made. The Wichita County Indians stretched the lead to eighteen (9-27) early in the second period and led 13-31 with approximately four minutes left in the half. Brett Lampe connected on a trey at 3:40 to move the score to 16-31 and Peter followed with a trey at 1:13 to bring the score to 23-38. The Indians trailed at halftime 23-40.

At the 6:20 mark in the third, the Indians missed a lay-up opportunity, rebounded the ball, and missed again. Leoti answered with a basket. St. Francis followed with a turnover. At 3:30, the Indians trailed 28-50. Wichita County led by 24 at the close of the third period, 33-57.

The margin became as much as 25 in the fourth period, but the Indians cut the lead to 14 several times and had possession. The Indians could not recover from the deficit allowed early in the contest. The Indians were defeated 46-69.

The Indians were led in scoring by Jonathan Butler with 13 points. Dylan Peter scored 10. Garrett Figgins 8, Brett Lampe 7, Isaac Schiltz 5, Mason Schiltz 2, and Matt Tygart 1 rounded out the Indian's scoring column. Wichita County had 5 players score 8 or more points: Horton 15, Smith 12, Martinez 10, Budde 8, and Nickelson 8.

The Indians were 13-23 from the charity stripe; Wichita County was 6-12. The Indians shot 40% from the field, grabbed 13 rebounds, and committed 22 turnovers. Wichita County hit 46% from the floor, committed 20 turnovers, and gathered in 43 rebounds.

Three seniors played their last game for the Indians: Brett Lampe, Garrett Figgins, and Zach Zweygardt.

In the other boys games in the 2A Substate on Monday evening, Ness City routed Trego Community 70-33, Oberlin defeated Rawlins County 63-46, and Hill City defeated Oakley 57-47. In the thirty-two 2A Substate games played across the state, all 31 home teams won.
