Grade School Awards Assembly Held
St. Francis Elementary School held their annual Awards Assembly on May 24th. Many different awards were presented to the students to reward their hard work and recognize accomplishments throughout the school year.
Rob Schiltz, superintendent of schools, opened the assembly by presenting the Kansas Assessment Awards for 2011. The state goal for attaining AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) for each school was to have 87.8% of the students proficient in reading and 86.8% proficient in math. St. Francis students surpassed this goal in every classroom.
In third grade, 100% of the students reached proficiency in reading and math. In fourth grade, 92.6% were proficient in reading and 92.3% in math. The fourth graders were also required to take the Kansas Science Assessment, and 100% of the students reached proficiency. In fifth grade 90.9% of the students reached proficiency in reading and 90.5% in math. In sixth grade, 93.8% were proficient in reading and 100% in math. Many students reached the highest level awarded - exemplary - and the individual students were recognized.
Carol Ross and Nela Carmichael, representing On Stage Eight, awarded a free registration to the Drama Camp they will be sponsoring this summer. Students in the elementary school created art projects that were judged by a committee. The winner was Jenna Confer. Jenna also received a t-shirt and a sack of "goodies."
Each of the teachers gave numerous awards. Some of the awards are listed below.
Mrs. Cassidy and Mrs. Faulkender, first grade teachers, presented their Manners Award to McKenna Poling. The Hugs Award went to Amanda Neitzel and Dawn Rice. Amanda Neitzel and Jordyn Faulkender received the Spelling Award. Attendance Awards also went to Amanda Neitzel and Jordyn Faulkender. Cuttter Neitzel and Alvaro Fernandez received the Most Improved Award. Three students, Dawn Rice, Cutter Neitzel, and Jordyn Faulkender received Accelerated Reader Awards. The Best-All-Round Award went to Hadleigh Hilt. The teachers recognized the entire class for being outstanding readers. Mrs. Cassidy awarded McKenna Poling, Amanda Neitzel, Hadleigh Hilt, Joshua Berens, Dawn Rice, and Isaac Hathaway the Math Whiz Award.
The second grade awards were presented by Mrs. Raile and Mrs. Krien. Brady Schoenrogge received the Attendance Award for perfect attendance. Spelling Awards went to Emma Johnson, Jesse Baxter, Colton Neitzel and Kattie Wurm. Reading Awards went to Tyson Poling, Jesse Baxter, and Colton Neitzel. Stephanie Meyer received the Most Improved Reader Award. Receiving the Fantastic Handwriting Award were Emma Johnson, Jesse Baxter, Colton Neitzel, Kattie Wurm, D.J. Easter, Shadryon Blanka, Adam Krien, and Kobe Tice. Citizenship Awards were received by Emma Johnson, Garin Cooper, and Colton Neitzel. Receiving awards for not missing a homework assignment from Mrs. Krien were Jesse Baxter, Kobe Tice, Adam Krien, Colton Neitzel, and Josh VanAllen.
Cindy Wiley and Sandy Smull, third grade teachers, presented awards to the 3rd grade class. Receiving Honor Roll Awards were Karly Bandel, Cassidy Busse, and Audrey Meyer. Karly Bandel received the Spelling Award. The Science Award went to Aaron White. Zach Koger received the Sunshine Award and Brady Dinkel received an award for perfect attendance. Mrs. Smull presented Cassidy Busse with The Reader Race Award. Dakota Morris received the Penmanship Award and Alondra Gomez the Most Improved Award. The teachers presented the Kindness Award to the entire class.
Fourth grade awards were distributed by Becky McAtee, fourth grade teacher. Shelby Wolff and Aaron Blair received an Attendance Award for their perfect attendance. Receiving Spelling Bee awards were Taylor Kinzer, Lauren Johnson, Kyla Hicks, and Shelby Wolff. Jessica Confer received the Spelling Award. The Reading Award went to Taylor Kinzer and Mason Schmid. April Fernandez won the Hard-Working Award. Shaylyn Zweygardt was the Most Improved Reader. Citizenship Awards went to Alex Queen and Teagan Landenberger.
Lynnette Nolan, fifth grade teacher presented the sixth grade awards. Receiving Attendance Awards were Kenny Adams, Emily Dinkel, Mady Tice, and Reagan Beims. The Spelling Bee Awards went to Luke Lampe, Devin Patton, and Matthisen Witzel. Earning Social Studies Awards were Mady Tice, Reagan Beims, and Devin Patton. Science Awards went to Zoe Sundstrom, Luke Lampe, Matthisen Witzel, and Devin Patton. Kenny Adams received the Most Improved Award. Hannah Bracelin, Coy Cassaw, and Reagan Beims received Citizenship Awards.
Julie Wolters, sixth grade teacher presented Attendance Awards to Jenna Confer and Trey VanAllen. Quinten Cravens earned a Best of Show Art Award. Soil Conservation Awards went to Sophie White and Taryn Zweygardt.
Debbie Fiala, band instructor, praised the entire 5th grade class for participation in the Music Contest. Every student in 5th grade presented either a vocal or instrumental solo (or both) at the contest. Earning AP rating were Jylian Laten and Nick Paulsen. Earning 1+ ratings for instrumental music were Jenna Confer, Taylor Rogers, and Quinten Cravens.
Vocal awards were presented by JeanAnn Confer, grade school music instructor. Receiving an AP rating for a vocal solo at the contest was Jenna Confer. Receiving 1+ ratings were Katie Schmid, Danielle Frink, and Megan Harrison. Receiving AP1+ ratings were Jenna Confer, Ryan Grover, Quinten Cravens, and Katie Schmid. Fifth grade students receiving awards were Reagan Beims, Mady Tice, Nick Paulsen, Hannah Bracelin, Jylian Laten, Matthisen Witzel, and Tate Busse. Twenty-one 4th grade students were recognized for reaching the "black belt' level with recorders. Receiving an Advanced Recorder Award were Emmanuel Fierro, Lauren Johnson, Lindsey Johnson, Mason Schmid, Taylor Kinzer, Jessie Confer, and Tiernan Poling. Taylor Rogers, Quinten Cravens, and Joel Hill were recognized for their outstanding work on the keyboard. Jeremiah Neitzel received Mrs. Confer's Right-Hand Award for helping throughout the year.
Mr. Schiltz presented Joyce Faulkender, retiring first grade teacher, with a gift from the school. Mrs. Faulkender has taught in the St. Francis Schools for 27 years.
