SFCHS Takes First Place at State Journalism Contest

SFCHS journalism students gather in front of the Kansas Union where the state journalism contest was held May 5. Not pictured are Jandy Dunn and Lucas Carmichael who competed with carry-ins.Saint Francis journalism students brought back the Class 1A Sweepstakes title in the Kansas Scholastic Press Association State Contest in Lawrence, Kansas on Saturday, May 5. Eighteen SFCHS Journalism students competed. The final results in the 1A Class reflected that Saint Francis tripled their nearest competitor’s score.
“Sixty-one judges sifted through 1,387 entries to award first, second, third placings as well as three honorable mentions in Classes 1A/2A, 3A/4A and 5A/6A,” Jeff Brown, KSPA Executive Director, announced. “Classes are separated only as a means of determining sweepstakes winners in each class, but not individual winners.”

Four-year journalism students Hayley, Caitlin and Allison receive the All-Kansas plaque presented to SFCHS for their 2011 yearbook at the KSPA State Contest on May 5. All three serve as editors on the 2012 yearbook staff along with Tilyn Bell and Trista Orth. Ross Nicklos, Casey Keller and Lucas Carmichael are also part of the Editorial Board.“I am extremely proud of these student journalists,” journalism adviser Brenda Day said. “Without the support and encouragement of the administration, our students would not experience success at this level.”
