Jasper Hunt Wins Cheyenne Co. Spelling Bee

St. Francis 7th grader Jasper Hunt won the Cheyenne County Spelling Bee held in the St. Francis Grade School Gymnasium on Tuesday, February 9. St. Francis 7th grader Schulyer Lennox placed second. Thirty students endured several rounds of intense spelling before the eventual winner was determined. Fifteen students from Cheylin Schools and 15 from St. Francis Community Schools participated in the bee. The students ranged in age from 4th grade to 8th grade.

Students representing St. Francis Community Schools included:
4th Grade:  Addy Christensen, Dodge Fromholtz, and Rhonald Neitzel
5th Grade:  Charity Engle, Lydia Jenkins, and Talexa Weeter
6th Grade:  Alvaro Fernandez, McKenna Poling, and Hailey Robbins
7th Grade:  Jasper Hunt, Schulyer Lennox, and Colton Neitzel
8th Grade:  Audrey Meyer, Dakota Morris, and Perla Yanez

Some of the words spelled by the students included easier words such as; curly, cranny, all-star, napkin, towel, habits, quack, frothy, likable, splashy, naysayer, forum, acre, postpone, crumb, band-aid, curries, euro, granola, excuse, thigh, flattery, shoehorn, drench, scarlet, emerald, summary, fringe, plateau, beverage, and pedigree.

Students also spelled many more difficult words including:  zealous, montage, pomposity, udon, polemic, collude, mogul, enunciate, genteel, chortic, macaw, vicinity, columnist, parable, hoity-toity, trellis, and calico. 

Jasper won the contest by correctly spelling the word anorak.
