Comments:

"The St. Francis wrestling team continues to push through their season. This past weekend we competed in the Buffalo Invitational in Atwood. Friday night we traveled over to Atwood as well to compete in a round robin. Right now, it’s crucial for our kids to get mat time. Each time they step on the mat they get better and that’s what we want right now. This was a good weekend for many of them as we have guys who are starting to turn the corner. We are vastly approaching our postseason and it’s crucial we improve each week as we get closer to regionals. We have guys who still are figuring out how good they are, and how good they can be; which can be frustrating but, I believe that we can get it figured out here in the next couple of weeks. The goal each week is to take steps forward, no steps back. I believe for the most part we are doing that, we still have mental breakdowns in matches but, the mistakes are being cleaned up. We preach the importance of expecting your opponent’s best every match, you should never look ahead or behind but, focus on the now, focus on what’s right in front of you. This is hard to do with regionals approaching but, it’s vital for development. I look forward to this group continuing to put it all out on the line.

Individually, Perla Yanez continues to battle each week. You watch her from match to match and you can see some improvement. She really has a good grasp of technique just struggles with being aggressive right from the whistle. Every time she steps out on the mat she battles; it doesn’t matter if she’s been beat by the same opponent she will battle. Garin Cooper wrestled very well this weekend and continues to make big strides. He is gritty and really does a good job of keeping his emotions in check in high stake matches. Up to this point he has had himself quite the season. Really looking for him to continue to improve here this last few weeks. Aaron White had some ups and downs. When he believes he can win you get a glimpse of how good of a wrestler he can be, but when he doubts himself, he gets beat by kids he is better than. That is a battle he has to stay on top of. Eli Mills continues to improve every week. He really has developed a good feel of the sport and does a lot of good things in every match. As he continues to gain some more experience, I think he can surprise some people. Caleb Todd had a good day on Saturday. He finally went out and just wrestled hard and he did a great job. I think his last match went a long way in helping his confidence. He continues to improve and that’s what we want to see. Tiernan Poling was very dominant this weekend in pinning everyone he wrestled. He is making some big strides right now and its important for him to continue to get better. I’d like to see him open up more on his feet and that is something he is working on. Shannon Rethke really has improved from where he started at the beginning of the season. He works really hard in practice and that work is paying off. He really is gaining a sense of the type of wrestler he wants to be and is really focusing on his strengths and that is encouraging to see. Arthur Albuquerque continues to fight each time he steps on the mat. He got a little banged up this weekend and I was encouraged to see him grit through the pain. Coming into this season he had never wrestled before and its been fun to watch him grow and develop. Sam Dovico really does a great job every time she steps out on the mat. She is at a very difficult weight and it really doesn’t phase her. I have been very impressed with her knowledge and feel of this sport. She is a lot of fun to watch. Jayce Nider had an up and down weekend which you hate to see this time of year. Jayce’s biggest deal is he doesn’t open up in matches like I know he would like. He really does a lot of good things and we are waiting for him to put it altogether. Once he truly believes in his abilities, he will be a force to reckon with. Tyson Poling had a good weekend. It was good to see him place at a tournament and wrestle with some confidence. He is another one who has a lot of natural ability just hasn’t quite put it altogether yet. But he is getting better and as he starts having more and more success on the mat it will go along way in developing his confidence. Shadyron Blanka had a tough week. He missed half the week being sick so it was good to see him go out and compete the best that he could. I know he wasn’t feeling his best but, he did a lot of good things. I believe he can beat anybody he wrestles. He just really needs to start believing that for himself.  Once the light comes on mentally it will be fun to see. Seth Hilt really has come a long way in the past year. He has had a great season up to this point and has placed in several tournaments. Seeing him have these results is a great reminder of how much you can improve if you stick with something and work hard every single day.

This upcoming Friday we will be traveling to Norton to compete in the Tournament of Champions. This tournament has always been a good one. There is a lot of great wrestling and great wrestlers here from both the MCL and NWKL leagues. Both leagues have a lot of tradition and it’s fun to be a part of that. This tournament will really give us a good idea of where we are at as our regional tournament will be fairly similar. I look forward to watching this team continue to compete."

The wrestling team will travel to Norton on Friday, January 25th, to wrestle. Please note the Wakeeney Invitational originally printed on the school calendar has been moved to Norton.
