Hoxie Indians Sweep Sainty Indians

Hoxie won the battle of the Indians on Friday, January 7th. The Hoxie Indians defeated the St. Francis Indians in all four games played. Only the varsity boys game was much of a contest.

The varsity boys game was an intense game with both teams playing good aggressive defense. The Sainty Indians played their best defensive game of the year, applying pressure on Hoxie throughout the game and doing a great job of helping one another defensively. The defensive effort was not enough to secure a win, and the boys lost 50-67 in a contest closer than the score might indicate.

Brett Lampe scored the first basket of the game, a three-point shot. The score was 7-10 after several minutes of fast-paced play. Hoxie then went on a short run to jump to a 9-19 lead after one quarter of play.

With 4:41 remaining in the second period, St. Francis had cut the Hoxie lead to four (21-25). Brett Lampe picked up his third foul and was forced to the bench for the rest of the half. Hoxie made several good plays in the later portion of the half to lead by ten (27-37) at halftime.

A nice pass by Brett Lampe to Isaac Schiltz resulted in a lay-in to cut the lead to 37-44 with 3:34 left in the third quarter. Another Sainty basket moved the score to 39-44 with 2:35 on the clock. Hoxie led 40-49 after three quarters of play.

St. Francis again cut into the lead--this time on a Jonathan Butler basket resulting from a Dylan Peter assist (43-49). After a Hoxie time out, the Indians were facing a 2-2-1 press. The press created a few turnovers and Hoxie advanced the lead to 43-61 on a Jaxson Moss trey with approximately three minutes to go. Hoxie went on to win the contest 50-67.

Moss led all scorers with 23 points. Hoxie also got 19 from Friess, 8 from Spresser, and 7 from Kennedy. Jonathan Butler led St. Francis with 16 points. Brett Lampe scored 10 and Isaac Schiltz 9. St. Francis was 15 of 24 from the free throw line while Hoxie sealed the win late in the game hitting 14-18.

St. Francis lost the Junior varsity boys contest 4-30 (two quarters only).

The varsity girls game was controlled from the outset by the Hoxie Lady Indians. The Hoxie girls applied full court pressure defense and raced the ball up the court offensively for easy baskets. St. Francis did not handle the pressure of the Hoxie defense well and turned the ball over many times leading to a large shot attempt advantage for the Hoxie team.

Pressing and running the court, Hoxie jumped out to a quick 0-18 lead. St. Francis finally got on the scoreboard with 0:54 left in the first quarter on a basket by Christina Hilt. Hoxie lead 2-20 after one quarter of play.

Hoxie pulled the full court press off with 3:41 left in the half, but led 5-31 by then. St. Francis trailed 10-35 at halftime.

Hoxie led 19-52 after three quarters of play and won the contest 23-63. The fourth quarter was played with a running clock.

Christina Hilt led St. Francis in scoring with 9 points. No other Lady Indian scored more than three points. Hoxie had three girls in double figures.

The junior varsity girls lost to Hoxie 15-63.
