Volleyball Teams Host WC and RC

On Tuesday, September 13th, the St. Francis Lady Indian volleyball teams hosted teams from Wallace County (Sharon Springs) and Rawlins County (Atwood). The Lady Indian varsity team lost both matches to their opponents while the JV team split winning one of two. The St. Francis C-team won both of their matches.

In the varsity match against Wallace County, the first set was tied at 8-all but Wallace County gained a 9-13 lead in the next few moments. The Lady Indians came back to earn a 13-all tie. The score stood at 18-14 after a stuff block by Justice Wiley. The Lady Indians earned a 21-16 lead on an ace serve by Wiley and went on to win the first set 25-18.

In the second set, the Lady Indians trailed 6-9 after a Wallace County tip found an open area. The deficit went to 7-13 after a Lady Indian block attempt landed out-of-bounds. St. Francis trailed 11-19 at one point, but cut the spread to 17-20 following several nice serves by Kaitlin Figgins. Wallace County won the second set 19-25.

The Lady Indians looked sluggish in the third set and never really got things going. The Indians scored their second point of the match on a kill by Figgins to make the score 2-9. The team fell behind 7-22 and lost the third set (and match) 13-25.

The Lady Indian - Lady Buff match was a good one! The Lady Indians jumped out to an 11-5 lead and quickly stretched the spread to 17-8. The Lady Buffs recovered somewhat, and trimmed the lead to 18-15. The score became tied at 22-all before the Lady Indians sealed the set with a stuff block by Clarice Neitzel to earn a 25-22 win in game one.

The Lady Indians fell behind by five points early in game two, but cut the lead to two points on a kill by Kaitlin Figgins on a Rawlins County over-set. Neitzel tipped for a kill to trim the lead to 17-18. The Lady Indians tied the set at 18 and again at 20 on a Figgins kill. Even though Rawlins County later "donated" two points to the Lady Indians on missed serves, Rawlins County's Hillary Chvatal (6'2" Sr.) made several consecutive kills to seal the set for the Lady Buffs. The set ended in a 25-22 loss for the Lady Indians.

The third set found the Lady Indians falling behind by four early (4-8). A Kaitlin Figgins kill cut the RC lead to 13-14. Clarice Neitzel tipped for a kill to make the score 14-15. Jacquelyn Ketzner served up an ace to tie the set at 15-all. The Lady Indians then made three consecutive ball-handling errors to move the score to 15-18. Rawlins County scored on an ace serve and a kill tip to move the score to 15-20, and St. Francis then mishandled a set to give the Lady Buffs a 15-21 lead. The Lady Buffs ended the match with two Chvatal kills to hand the Lady Indians a disappointing 19-25 loss in game three.

The junior varsity team lost to Rawlins County 15-25; 17-25 but defeated Wallace County 25-21; 25-21.

The C team defeated Rawlins County in three sets TWICE. The first match resulted in scores of 14-25; 25-22; 15-12. The Lady Indians fell behind 10-19 mid-way through game one and could never recover. In game two, the Lady Indians trailed 0-8 early in the contest, but eventually earned an 18-all tie. The team defeated the Lady Buffs 25-22 in an exciting come-from-behind win. In game three, the point spread was never more than one point until the Lady Indians earned a 14-12 lead. The Lady Indians held on to win the match 15-12.

The C team defeated Rawlins County 26-24; 19-25; 15-7 in the second match. Wallace County did not have enough players for a C-team.

The Lady Indians will play Weskan and Granada, CO, in Weskan on Tuesday, September 20th. Matches begin at 3:00 PM. (Please note the starting time has been changed from what was printed on the school calendar.)
